Education: Requirements: - 2 to 5 years
- The applicants should have experience in the following business area(s): Garments, Sweater Industry
Skills Required: Additional Requirements: - Strong experience with SHIMA SEIKI systems: SDS-ONE APEX / APEXFiz / Virtual Sampling modules.
- Solid understanding of knitwear: knit structure, yarn types, machine limitations, whole garment or flat knit techniques.
- 3D design skills / CG skills: ability to make realistic fabric simulation; understanding of how loop geometry, fabric drape, stretch etc. behaves.
- Proficiency in CAD / patternmaking tools in knit domain.
- Good visualization skills — able to see how virtual designs translate to real knit outcomes.
- Detail-oriented: precise in pattern specification, color matching, sizing/grading.
- Communication & collaboration: able to translate between creative/design team and technical/manufacturing teams.
- Problem-solving: when virtual sample doesn’t match expected, figure out if it’s a design issue, machine limitation, yarn behavior etc.
- (Desirable) Experience in minimizing sampling/waste, sustainable design practices.
- Previous work in sweater design/programming using SHIMA SEIKI machines.
- Experience creating and owning virtual sampling workflows.
- Portfolio of 3D knit samples / virtual garments.
- Familiarity with yarns, dyes, fabric behavior and finishing.
- Some programming or technical background is a plus, though not necessarily in software engineering — more in machine instructions, machining workflows.
Responsibilities & Context: Job Summary
A 3D Virtual Designer & Programmer converts design ideas into digital knit prototypes, simulate fabric behavior and texture, and program knitting machine instructions. The role bridges design, tech, and production, helping reduce physical sampling, accelerate development cycles, and ensure high fidelity between virtual designs and end product.
Responsibilities:
- Create realistic 3D virtual samples/prototypes of knit garments/fabrics using SHIMA SEIKI’s virtual sampling tools.
- Translate designer sketches / concept boards into digital designs: patterns, colorways, textures.
- Adjust and refine virtual samples to match fabric characteristics (stretch, drape, loop behavior) and desired aesthetics.
- Develop knit-programming for SHIMA SEIKI flat knitting machines (whole garment, etc.), using the relevant CAD/CAM modules.
- Prepare pattern files, mark-up, grading, etc., ensuring compatibility with machine constraints.
- Optimize programs for efficient usage of yarns, minimizing waste and maximizing quality.
- Work closely with fashion designers, knit technicians, sourcing/manufacturing to ensure designs are feasible and manufacturable.
- Provide input during yarn selection, color matching, finishing, etc., informed by virtual sample feedback.
- Liaise with R&D / software teams (if present) on improvements or adjustments to virtual sampling workflows.
- Validate virtual designs vs physical samples (when available) to ensure accuracy in fit, fabric behavior, color rendering, etc.
- Troubleshoot issues in virtual sample output or in-program machine errors.
- Maintain version control of program files and design libraries.
- Seek improvements in design-to-product process: faster iteration, better virtual fidelity, lower cost/sampling waste.
- Stay up to date with software/hardware developments in the Shima Seiki ecosystem (e.g. APEXFiz, SDS-ONE APEX updates).
- Potentially contribute ideas to virtual sampling R&D/automation.
