It prioritizes support to women, men and children living in poverty or facing disadvantage or discrimination. It also provides legal aid, advice and representation across a range of areas, including civil, criminal, family, labour and land law, as well as on constitutional rights and remedies, providing access to judicial remedies alongside alternative dispute resolution wherever appropriate. Alongside individual legal aid, BLAST undertakes strategic litigation, or public interest litigation, as a key part of its advocacy for law and policy reforms to ensure effective legal protection of rights. Currently operating in 24 districts across the country, BLAST works through its staff lawyers (and paralegals and researchers) at headquarters and in each district unit, in collaboration with its enlisted panel of about 2600 lawyers across the country who provide legal redress to clients on a pro bono basis, with a nominal honorarium.
∎ Position Description: It is a mid-level position based at BLAST Head Office located in Dhaka under the project titled “Empowering Workers for Justice (EWJ)”. The University of South Carolina’s Rule of Law Collaborative (USC-ROLC), through its status as a practical research institution, and the Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST), through its expertise as the premier legal aid organization in Bangladesh, are best placed to lead the ‘Empowering Workers for Justice (EWJ)’ project to reinforce the ability of construction and tannery workers to organize, self-advocate, confront abuses, and push for reform on both an operational and policy level.
Job Responsibilities:
∎ Prepare designs and plans for advocacy & communication activities especially focus on EWJ Project.
∎ Prepare concept notes, background documents and presentations for different advocacy events of EWJ project.
∎ Collect and maintain documentation on key policy and legal changes relevant to the organization's advocacy activities and plans.
∎ S/he will be responsible for assisting in identifying socio-legal research issues arising from community and other consultations.
∎ To organizing seminars, workshops and lectures, including correspondence with speakers, press and participants.
∎ To assist in maintaining internal and external communications, including with government ministries and agencies, the judiciary, the media, national and international organizations relating to advocacy.
∎ Coordinating with other networks and organizations regarding press releases or preparation of advocacy campaigns.
∎ Prepare monthly, quarterly, half-yearly and annual report regarding advocacy activities.
∎ Review all BLAST's documents, develop advocacy materials and document the lessons learned from BLAST's activities and different projects specially EWJ project and assist to develop the advocacy strategies and operational guidelines.
∎ Unpack the technical issues and suggestions of way forward around the selected advocacy topics, and bring these to the BLAST Management at which time plans will be developed to best implement of agreed initiatives.
∎ Actively participate and represent the organization in various networks and movements.
∎ Document and preserve all advocacy-related documents properly and assist to ensure those as and when required.
∎ Ensure proper recording and placement of books, journals, newspapers, reports and other publications, photographs, and slides in a proper place.
∎ Record and maintain minutes of advocacy meetings, and relevant materials.
Additional Requirements:
∎ Minimum 5 years’ professional experience in the relevant field.
∎ Experience in policy advocacy.
∎ Good networking with different forums, electronic and print Media.
∎ Excellent facilitation skill.
∎ Good writing skills both in English and Bengali.
∎ Good in communication both in English and Bangla.
∎ Good computer skill in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
∎ Leadership, Technical know-how, Linkage and Network and Facilitation skill
Salary:
∎ Tk. 46000 (Monthly)
∎ Salary, Benefits and allowances: commensurate with experience and BLAST`s salary
scale and policy, two festival bonus equivalent to one month`s basic salary each payable after successful completion of 6 months probation.
