Job Context:
∎ BLAST is a leading national legal aid and human rights organization in Bangladesh providing legal advice, mediation, litigation services, and advocacy to ensure women`s rights, men and children living in poverty or facing discrimination/social exclusion throughout the country. BLAST works through its Head Office in Dhaka and several District-level Offices with a network of panel lawyers and partner organizations.
∎ Position Description: It is a mid-level position based at Ukhia, Cox’s Bazar Project Office located in Ukhia. The Staff Lawyer is responsible for planning and overseeing day-to-day implementation of legal support activities, supervising staff, and maintaining communication with focal points regarding legal services, awareness, advocacy, training, and monitoring to ensure smooth and timely completion of BLAST legal activities. The Staff Lawyer is required to ensure justice and Awareness on legal rights, women, men, and children living in poverty or disadvantage or in marginalized communities, and to attain and uphold their human rights through legal aid including advice, awareness-raising, mediation, and litigation as needed, including necessary follow up.

Job Responsibilities:
∎ Interview clients and record their applications.
∎ Check and maintain files, registers, and case diary regularly.
∎ To conduct different stakeholders in the court, court officials, prosecutors, PP/APP, Police, and protection focal Point (PFP). Represent legal matters on behalf of the refugees in court.
∎ To collect relevant documents from various stakeholders in relation to court cases, and communicate with BLAST Unit management Committee, Cox’s Bazar.
∎ Scrutinize the case paper and analyze the merit of the case in accordance with the BLAST Litigation Policy.
∎ Conduct mediation in accordance with the BLAST Mediation Guideline, as and when necessary.
∎ Maintain regular contact with clients/beneficiaries.
∎ Update daily, weekly and monthly reports to the court cases, and detention monitoring outside Cox’s Bazar in the prescribed template.
∎ To conduct litigation on behalf of BLAST following BLAST Litigation Policy.
∎ Supervise and monitor case progress, including communications with the client, concerned panel lawyers, and sign language or other interpreters and also inform the client at the time of appointment of the panel lawyer and sign language or another interpreter accordingly.
∎ Given time to time case progress update, and monitoring to court hearing date the refugees present in time and, ensure safe transportation of the refugees.
∎ To assist in refugees visiting their relatives in the prison.
∎ Appear before the court as required.
∎ Issue letters to the Panel Lawyers for engagement in conducting cases.
∎ Assist the Panel Lawyer while the case hearing if required.
∎ Maintain records of engaged Panel Lawyers.
∎ Prepare monthly/quarterly/half-yearly/yearly legal statements/reports regarding applications received, advice, mediation, litigation, referral, case studies, and others relevant as required.
∎ Daily update the Case Management System (CMS).
∎ To collect and disseminate the case Information and documents to the respective persons and regular contact with other BLAST Units on a case by case basis as needed.
∎ Conduct workshops, seminars, training, and courses and arrange meetings with panel lawyers.
∎ Prepare inquiry reports for cases whenever required.
∎ Network/liaise with relevant government officials, NGOs, DPOs, and other actors as required, in consultation with the Coordinator.
∎ Perform all other duties as and when required by the authority.

Additional Requirements:
∎ Enrolled with Bangladesh Bar Council as an Advocate including at least 5 years practical experience with a membership of Cox’s Bazar Bar Association.
∎ Only female candidates who have 3 years of experience in the local court are eligible to apply.
∎ Have knowledge about the different sectors of law especially in family laws, domestic violence, violence against women and children.
∎ Have the ability to work independently in a pro bono service manner.
∎ Commitment to handle BLAST's cases.
∎ Sound managerial skill.
∎ Hardworking, proactive, and able to work in a team under pressure.
∎ Good writing, speaking, and research skills both in Bangla and English.
∎ Proficient in MS Office.
