Educational Requirements:

∎ Enrolled with Cox's Bazar Bar Council as an Advocate including at least 3 years practical experience in respective local courts.
∎ Applicants, resident of Chattogram and Cox's Bazar will be given priority.
∎ Applicants who has earlier working experiences/currently working at legal aid will be given preferences.
∎ Good writing, speaking and research skills both in Bangla and English
∎ Proficient in MS Office

Job Context:
∎ BLAST is one of the leading legal services organizations in Bangladesh, and the only one that provides access to legal aid across the spectrum, from the frontlines of the formal justice system to the apex court. It prioritizes support to women, men and children living in poverty or facing disadvantage or discrimination. It also provides legal aid, advice and representation across a range of areas, including civil, criminal, family, labour and land law, as well as on constitutional rights and remedies, providing access to judicial remedies alongside alternative dispute resolution wherever appropriate. Alongside individual legal aid, BLAST undertakes strategic litigation, or public interest litigation, as a key part of its advocacy for law and policy reforms to ensure effective legal protection of rights. Currently operating in 19 districts across the country, BLAST works through its staff lawyers (and paralegals and researchers) at headquarters and in each district unit, in collaboration with its enlisted panel of about 2600 lawyers across the country who provide legal redress to clients on a pro bono basis, with a nominal honorarium.
∎ Position Description: BLAST is looking for a Staff Lawyer for Cox’s Bazar (Ukhia) Office under the project PLA_HC . The project aims to provide legal services – legal literacy, legal advice, information, referral, mediation, and where appropriate litigation – in three (3) Unions (Nhilla, Sabrang, and Baharchhara) in Teknaf Upazila of Cox’s Bazar to ensure access to justice for individuals in the community as well as to provide increased responsiveness of local justice actors – by capacity building training to project staff, community volunteers (Self-help group) and local government representatives.
∎ Project Duration: Position for six months from 01 August 2020 to January 2021.

Job Responsibilities:
∎ Performing all duties and responsibilities under the direct supervision, instruction, direction and control of the Head of the Legal Cell;
∎ Interviewing clients for legal aid in Subordinate Courts to the Supreme Court and receiving applications for legal aid required;
∎ Advising clients in person, and/or through mobile, telephone, e-mail etc as required;
∎ Ensuring prompt response/feedback of queries on mobile and keeping update regularly
∎ Maintaining notes and records of all interviews with clients or mediation sessions or hearings in Court;
∎ Ensuring follow-up of each case of Courts, Subordinate Courts and/or Supreme Court at HO as it progresses, particularly of project titled on IRC Project and also of settled litigation according to the organizational action plan;
∎ Supervising and coordinating with Staff Lawyers and monitoring their duties and responsibilities particularly of IRC project;
∎ Monitoring and managing cases filed and conduct litigation as and when necessary;
∎ Scrutinizing the merit of cases and giving opinion for filing cases before the subordinate court supreme Court at Cox’s Bazar;
∎ Ensuring proper procedures are duly followed for legal aid services;
∎ Ensuring preservation of case files and related records including on the Case Management System (CMS);
∎ Assisting in preparing and preserving the consolidated quantitative report/statement (monthly, quarterly, half-yearly and annual) on legal activities along with case studies on important settled litigation;
∎ Attending and organizing meeting and seminars as required;
∎ Frequently field visit;
∎ Performing any other relevant tasks as and when required by the management.

Additional Requirements:
∎ Age at most 45 years
∎ Flexibility to handle varied and demanding tasks and ability to balance priorities
∎ Ability to work independently, as well as member of a team, and to be flexible to accommodate the needs of stakeholders.
∎ Ability to lead the assignment and the team with remote supervision.
∎ Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Salary:
∎ Tk. 40000 (Monthly)
∎ Costs for field work/visit will be borne by BLAST according to its policies.
