∎ Job Context: The University of South Carolina’s Rule of Law Collaborative (USC-ROLC), through its status as a practical research institution, and the Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST), through its expertise as the premier legal aid organization in Bangladesh, are best-placed to lead the ‘Empowering Workers for Justice (EWJ)’ project to reinforce the ability of construction and tannery workers to organize, self-advocate, confront abuses, and push for reform on both an operational and policy level.
∎ Position Description: BLAST seeks some qualified and experienced Staff Lawyers for its offices in 5 districts. This position is under the EWJ Project. The position of Staff Lawyer is required to ensure justice and awareness on legal rights and responsibilities for Leather & leather goods sector and Construction workers, women, men and children living in poverty or disadvantage or in marginalized communities, and to attain and uphold their human rights through legal aid including legal advice, legal information, legal support, referral for available services, awareness-raising, mediation and litigation as needed, including necessary follow up.
Job Responsibilities:
∎ S/he will be responsible for coordinating project activities at district level.
∎ S/he will collaborate with the Trade Union, NGOs, relevant government offices and other relevant service providers relating to networking meetings and local level advocacy meetings.
∎ Oversee the formation of Self Help Groups and capacity building activities to transform them towards sustainable groups
∎ S/he will provide legal information and advice, facilitate any mediation processes and coordinate with the panel lawyers and client regarding any litigation.
∎ Conduct Legal awareness session among Leather & Leather goods and/or Construction workers, organized by the Paralegal through Self Help Groups
∎ Interview the clients and document their statements as application.
∎ Check and maintain files, registers and case diary regarding cases as per BLAST guideline.
∎ Maintain regular contact with clients/beneficiaries.
∎ Assist the Panel Lawyer while the case hearing, if required.
∎ Maintain records of engaged Panel Lawyers.
∎ Prepare concept notes, schedule and event report and share with supervisor and/or Team leader
∎ Prepare periodic and monthly activities plan for relevant district, following the project activities plan and ensure proper implementation of them to achieve project goal.
∎ Arrange and conduct meetings as required
∎ Prepare monthly/quarterly/half yearly/yearly legal statements/reports regarding applications received, advice, referral, mediation, litigation and case studies as per BLAST guidelines.
∎ Update the Case Management System (CMS) regularly.
∎ Conduct/organize/attend meetings, workshops, seminars and training courses.
∎ Perform all other duties as and when required by the authority.
Additional Requirements:
∎ Have knowledge about different laws of the state especially Labor & Family Laws, Domestic Violence, Violence against Women and Children.
∎ Commitment to conduct and handle BLAST's cases
∎ Sound managerial skill
∎ Hard working, proactive and ability to work in team under pressure
∎ Good writing, speaking and research skills both in Bangla and English
∎ Proficient in MS Office
Salary:

∎ Weekly 2 holidays
∎ Salary, Benefits and allowances: commensurate with experience and BLAST's salary scale and policy, two festival bonuses equivalent to one month's basic salary each payable after successful completion of 6 months’ probation.
