Job Context:
∎ BLAST is a leading national legal aid and human rights organization in Bangladesh providing legal advice, mediation, and litigation services, and undertaking advocacy to ensure the rights of women, men, and children living in poverty or facing discrimination/social exclusion throughout the country. BLAST works through its Head Office in Dhaka and several District-level Offices with a network of panel lawyers and partner organizations.
∎ Position Description: It is a mid-level position based at Sylhet Unit Office in Sylhet District. The Staff Lawyer is responsible for planning and overseeing the day-to-day implementation of Advice to the clients/beneficiaries directly and through telephone or e-mail, ensuring follow-up of settled litigation according to the action plan, Ensuring proper procedures are duly followed, and maintaining records and registers as per guidelines. The Staff Lawyer is required to support the conduct of litigation, Panel Lawyer while the case hearing, organize/attend meetings, workshops, seminars, and training courses, and services & participate in discussions, and fact-finding activities organized by other partners` organizations.
Job Responsibilities:
∎ Interview the clients and record their applications.
∎ Check and maintain files, registers, and case diaries regarding cases as per guidelines.
∎ Scrutinize the case paper and analyze the case's merit per guidelines.
∎ Conduct mediation meetings as and when necessary.
∎ Maintain regular contact with clients/beneficiaries.
∎ Conduct litigation on behalf of BLAST.
∎ Appear before the court as required, particularly in family cases.
∎ Issue letters regarding the cases to the Panel Lawyers.
∎ Assist the Panel Lawyer while the case hearing, if required.
∎ Maintain records of engaged Panel Lawyers.
∎ Prepare monthly/quarterly/half yearly/yearly legal statements/reports regarding applications received, mediation, litigation, and case studies as per guidelines.
∎ Day-to-day update of the Case Management System (CMS).
∎ Conduct/organize/attend meetings, workshops, seminars, and training courses.
∎ Perform all other duties as and when required by the authority.
Additional Requirements:
∎ Age at least 25 years
∎ Must have at least 5 years working experience in the related field.
∎ Must have at least 5 years of professional/practical work experience as a Sylhet District Bar Association member with a Bar Council certificate.
∎ 3 years of experience will be acceptable for women candidates.
∎ Preference will be given to permanent residents of the Sylhet district.
∎ Preference will be given to candidates with experience in legal aid services.
∎ Preference will be given to candidates with report writing and speaking skills in both Bengali and English.
∎ Should have good computer knowledge.
∎ Should have the ability to supervise and team lead.
∎ Female candidates will be given preference.
Salary:
∎ Negotiable
∎ Commensurate with experience and BLAST`s salary scale and policy.
