Required Qualifications and Experience:

• The selected awardee should demonstrate:

• University degree in Communication, Development Studies, Media, Journalism, Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Animation, Anthropology, Climate/Environmental Studies or a relevant discipline.

• Proven professional experience in knowledge product development, communication for development, visual storytelling, documentation, animation, graphic design or related areas.

• Demonstrated experience in developing animated videos and/or comic books/illustrated knowledge products.

• Experience documenting Indigenous/local knowledge, climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, resilience or community-based practices will be highly desirable.

• Proven experience working directly with rural, coastal, climate-vulnerable or marginalized communities in Bangladesh.

• Strong skills in interviewing, field documentation, storytelling, script development, illustration and/or animation.

• Ability to transform complex development and climate-related information into simple, engaging and community-friendly messages.

• Strong Bangla communication and writing skills.

• Willingness and ability to travel to Sharan­khola and work directly with community members.

• Knowledge of ethical storytelling, informed consent, safeguarding and responsible use of community stories and images.

Project Background:

Bangladesh faces acute climate vulnerability, with rising sea levels, erratic weather patterns, and frequent disasters that threaten lives and livelihoods. Existing disaster preparedness systems are largely top-down and infrastructure-focused, limiting their reach and adaptability. Many lower-profile or less frequently affected areas remain underprepared, resulting in severe impacts during sudden events like flash floods or tidal surges due to weak local capacity and limited institutional support.

Despite these gaps, coastal communities, especially women and youth play critical roles in disaster response. They apply practical, experience-based strategies such as strengthening homes, managing water, monitoring embankments, and supporting vulnerable groups. However, their knowledge is often undocumented and excluded from formal Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) systems.

People for People (P4P) initiative, which is a partnership between OXFAM and CODEC, addresses this by making women and youth Environmental Human Rights and Land Defenders and allowing structured peer learning. It focuses on:

(1) protecting civic space through safe, trauma-aware engagement and leadership opportunities;

(2) transferring proven local practices via accessible, low-literacy tools and storytelling;

(3) integrating grassroots knowledge into institutional systems through participatory documentation and policy engagement.

1. Background

The People for People (P4P) project promotes climate resilience in coastal Bangladesh through peer-to-peer exchange of local knowledge, community learning, and women- and youth-led action. The project recognizes that communities repeatedly exposed to cyclones, floods, salinity and other climate-related hazards have developed valuable local and Indigenous knowledge and practical adaptation practices that can support less-exposed and underprepared communities. The project therefore seeks to document and share such knowledge through accessible and creative learning materials.

Under P4P, CODEC will facilitate knowledge exchange between communities in Sharan­khola Upazila of Bagerhat and Ramgati Upazila of Lakshmipur. The assignment will particularly focus on identifying climate-adaptive and Indigenous/local practices from Sharan­khola and transforming them into practical knowledge products that can be shared with communities in Ramgati.

The individual develops visual tools, comic books, oral histories, storytelling and other multimedia materials as important mechanisms for transferring community knowledge, particularly for audiences with diverse literacy levels.

2. Purpose of Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to identify, document, validate and creatively communicate community-based climate adaptation and Indigenous/local knowledge from Sharan­khola through innovative and accessible knowledge products, particularly an animated video and comic book, for peer-to-peer learning and knowledge exchange with communities in Ramgati.

3. Specific Objectives

The individual will:

a)     Identify practical and locally proven climate-adaptive and resilience practices in Sharan­khola.

b)     Document Indigenous/local knowledge and community experiences related to climate change adaptation, disaster preparedness and resilient livelihoods.

c)     Engage directly with project mentors, youth mentors, community members, project staff and relevant local actors to capture their knowledge and experiences.

d)     Assess and select practices that have potential for learning and adaptation in Ramgati.

e)     Develop animated video and comic book based on validated community knowledge and stories.

f)      Ensure that the knowledge products are simple, culturally appropriate, visually engaging and accessible to audiences with different literacy levels.

g)     Ensure ethical, consent-based and dignified representation of community members and their knowledge.

4. Scope of Work

The selected personnel will work closely with the P4P Project Management Team, project staff, mentors, youth mentors, community volunteers and community members.

A. Review and Inception

• Review relevant P4P project documents and existing knowledge materials.

• Develop an agreed approach and work plan with the P4P team.

• Identify key themes and potential sources of community knowledge.

B. Field-Based Knowledge Documentation

The selected personnel will undertake field visits to Sharan­khola and:

• Meet and interview project mentors, youth mentors, community members, project staff and other relevant stakeholders.

• Observe and document locally developed climate adaptation practices.

• Identify Indigenous, traditional and locally generated knowledge related to climate resilience.

• Collect relevant stories, interviews, photographs, observations and supporting information.

• Explore practices related to disaster preparedness, water management, climate-resilient livelihoods, agriculture, fisheries, housing, natural-resource management, environmental protection, women's resilience and youth-led adaptation.

C. Knowledge Validation and Selection

• Analyze the documented practices and identify the most relevant and transferable knowledge.

• Validate selected practices with community members, mentors and the P4P project team.

• Assess their potential relevance and applicability to communities in Ramgati.

• Develop story concepts/messages for the final knowledge products.

D. Animated Video Development

Lead and develop an animated video that:

• Presents selected community-based climate adaptation practices.

• Uses real community experiences and stories as the basis of the narrative.

• Communicates key messages through simple and engaging visual storytelling.

• Uses appropriate Bangla/local terminology and narration.

• Includes English subtitles where required.

• Is suitable for community learning sessions and digital/social-media dissemination.

E. Comic Book Development

Develop a community-friendly comic book that:

• Presents selected climate-adaptive practices through simple stories and illustrations.

• Reflects realistic community situations and experiences.

• Communicates climate risks and practical adaptation options.

• Is accessible to people with different literacy levels.

• Can be used by mentors and youth mentors during peer-learning sessions.

• Is suitable for printing and digital dissemination.

F. Review and Finalization

• Present draft products to CODEC for review.

• Incorporate reasonable technical and editorial feedback.

• Conduct validation with selected community representatives where required.

• Submit final production-ready products and editable source files.

6. Duration and Level of Effort

The selected personnel will be for three months, from September to November 2026.

The awardee of this assignment is expected to undertake field visits and spend adequate time with communities in Sharan­khola to understand and document their lived experiences, knowledge and adaptation practices.

6. Reporting and Coordination

The selected personnel will report to the P4P Project Management Team of CODEC and work closely with project staff, mentors, youth mentors and community representatives.

The selected person will participate in review meetings and incorporate feedback from CODEC during the development and finalization of the knowledge products.

7. Ownership and Confidentiality

All scripts, storyboards, illustrations, animation files, photographs, interviews, designs, source files and final knowledge products developed under this initiative will remain the property of CODEC/P4P.

The selected person shall maintain confidentiality and shall not publish, reproduce, distribute or use the materials or community stories for other purposes without prior written approval from CODEC.

All engagement with community members must follow appropriate informed consent, safeguarding, privacy and ethical documentation principles.
