Responsibilities & Context:
  • Lead the creative direction of fashion collections, establishing themes, color palettes, fabrics, and design aesthetics in line with the brand’s identity and market trends.

  • Conduct research on fashion trends, color forecasts, and consumer behavior to guide design concepts.

  • Develop mood boards, sketches, and concept designs that align with the season’s direction and customer preferences.

  • Collaborate with designers to create cohesive and trend-relevant collections.

  • Manage a team of fashion designers, pattern makers, and assistants, providing guidance and feedback on their work.

  • Set goals, assign tasks, and monitor performance to ensure the team meets deadlines and quality standards.

  • Provide training and development opportunities for the design team, encouraging creativity and technical skill improvement.

  • Foster a collaborative work environment, encouraging teamwork and innovation.

  • Plan and oversee the development of seasonal collections, from concept through to final samples.

  • Ensure each collection aligns with brand strategy, target customer, and market positioning.

  • Coordinate with product development and merchandising to finalize the collection lineup, including style selection, colorways, and fabric choices.

  • Manage timelines for each stage of the collection, from initial sketches to final approval, ensuring on-time completion.

  • Conduct in-depth analysis of current fashion trends, competitor collections, and consumer demands to inform design decisions.

  • Attend fashion shows, trade fairs, and other industry events to stay updated on global fashion trends.

  • Implement trend analysis into the design process, ensuring the collections remain competitive and aligned with market trends.

  • Collaborate with the product development team to ensure designs are feasible, production-friendly, and cost-effective.

  • Oversee the sampling process, coordinating with pattern makers, sample tailors, and fabric suppliers to produce accurate prototypes.

  • Make necessary adjustments to samples and prototypes, addressing issues with fit, construction, or materials.

  • Select and approve fabrics, trims, and accessories that align with the design concept, budget, and brand quality standards.

  • Develop relationships with fabric and material suppliers, negotiating terms to ensure quality and cost control.

  • Ensure that all materials used are consistent with the brand’s sustainability and ethical sourcing policies, if applicable.

  • Review designs and prototypes at each stage to ensure they meet aesthetic, functional, and quality standards.

  • Conduct quality checks on samples, including fit, construction, and fabric performance.

  • Work closely with quality control to ensure that production aligns with design specifications and quality standards.

  • Resolve any design-related issues that arise during the production process, making necessary adjustments to maintain quality.

  • Manage the design budget, ensuring cost-effective use of resources for fabric, trims, and other materials.

  • Work with the production team to ensure that designs can be produced within budget and retail price points.

  • Monitor the cost implications of design choices, making adjustments as needed to meet financial objectives.

  • Collaborate with merchandising to align collections with sales forecasts, consumer demand, and seasonal requirements.

  • Work with marketing teams to support brand storytelling and promotional strategies for each collection.

  • Participate in the creation of product catalogs, lookbooks, and digital assets that showcase the collection in alignment with the brand image.

  • Oversee the sample creation process, reviewing and approving initial and final samples before production.

  • Ensure all approved samples meet brand standards in fit, quality, and design.

  • Coordinate with the production team to ensure samples are ready for presentations, customer feedback sessions, or photoshoots.

  • Present designs to senior management, buyers, and stakeholders for feedback and approval.

  • Prepare presentation boards and sample racks, clearly communicating the design concept, target audience, and market relevance.

  • Incorporate feedback from internal teams and buyers to make necessary design adjustments before production.

  • Incorporate sustainable practices in the design process, including eco-friendly fabrics, minimal waste patterns, and ethical sourcing.

  • Work towards environmentally friendly production techniques, aligning designs with the brand’s sustainability goals if applicable.

  • Educate the design team on sustainable design and material sourcing to reduce the brand’s environmental impact.

  • Address challenges in design execution, such as fabric shortages, production delays, or design adjustments.

  • Troubleshoot design or production issues, working with various departments to implement solutions that meet deadlines and quality standards.

  • Adapt designs as necessary to resolve production constraints while maintaining design integrity.

  • Develop and manage the seasonal calendar for the design team, coordinating with other departments to ensure timely completion.

  • Monitor each stage of the design and production process, ensuring alignment with sales and delivery timelines.

  • Adjust schedules as needed to accommodate any delays or urgent requirements.

  • Maintain thorough records of all design work, including sketches, fabric selections, approved samples, and colorways.

  • Prepare and submit reports to senior management, providing insights on collection development, performance, and market feedback.

  • Document any changes in design specifications and maintain records for future reference.
