This position will ensure the provision of safe and affordable drinking water for vulnerable FDMN communities in Cox’s Bazar. The role involves monitoring and testing water from sources, storage, and distribution points; conducting chemical, physical, and bacteriological analyses; and supervising emergency water treatment activities. The person will collaborate with hygiene teams to raise community awareness, maintain laboratory functionality, and ensure compliance with SPHERE, WHO, and organizational standards. The position requires effective coordination with government authorities, UN agencies, NGOs, and project teams. Responsibilities include preparing reports, maintaining laboratory stocks, supporting field staff, and participating in sector meetings and capacity-building sessions. The officer will also contribute to seasonal programs, community engagement, and continuous improvement of water quality practices. This role requires travel to remote areas of Bangladesh and hands-on management of water quality operations.
Ensure periodic water quality tests for providing safe & affordable drinking for the vulnerable FDMN community- 40%
Monitor water supplied from sources, central storage systems, and distribution points on a daily/weekly basis to ensure safe drinking water for refugees and host communities in line with SPHERE, WHO, and IRB standards.
Conduct regular chemical, physical, and bacteriological testing of water in camps and host communities, and immediately report any contamination findings.
Oversee and support emergency water treatment activities, including chlorination.
Supervise daily testing of Free Residual Chlorine (FRC) in treated water at distribution points, storage facilities, and randomly selected household containers.
Collaborate with the Hygiene Promotion team to organize community awareness sessions.
Ensure proper handling, storage, and use of water treatment chemicals and disinfectants (e.g., purification tablets, DPD 1).
Maintain accurate documentation of all test results, recommend corrective actions when required, and prepare trend analysis reports.
Ensure timely procurement and availability of tools, reagents, and consumables.
Carry out water quality analysis at least twice for each borehole—during development and after hand pump installation.
Plan and deliver training sessions for staff on laboratory procedures, quality assurance, and safety practices.
Keep the Water Quality Laboratory fully functional, updated, and compliant with required standards.
Develop and implement testing schedules for camp water facilities, ensuring timely execution.
Conduct regular field visits to verify adherence to standard water sampling and testing procedures.
Collect water samples from multiple locations as required, based on operational needs.
Ensure effective water quality monitoring and timely sharing of information with the sector and relevant stakeholders, in compliance with WASH sector and SPHERE standards - 20%
Conduct year-round groundwater quality analysis, ensuring compliance with WASH sector guidelines and WHO standards.
Develop and follow individual work plans and water quality monitoring checklists.
Provide technical guidance to field staff for JART and AWD responses within the assigned Area of Responsibility (AoR).
Maintain an updated monthly inventory of lab supplies, ensure timely requests for reagents, and manage stock.
Supervise and monitor field-level water quality activities, ensuring adherence to organizational procedures and quality standards.
Verify work orders, specifications, and received materials related to water quality.
Conduct periodic water quality testing in Ukhiya and other assigned areas.
Prepare and implement community-level business/awareness plans in line with project proposals and organizational guidelines.
Cross-check and validate physical, chemical, and biological parameters to ensure a safe and healthy water environment.
Monitor overall progress of project activities and report on quality assurance.
Do effective and appropriate networking and coordination with different stakeholders-15%
Represent IRB WASH water quality in sectoral technical working groups and coordination forums.
Support water quality checks and water safety planning in collaboration with project teams.
Assist in organizing inception meetings, orientations, and workshops at different levels.
Participate in WASH sector, CiC coordination, and water quality monitoring meetings/workshops.
Organize and facilitate capacity-building training sessions on water quality testing.
Establish and maintain linkages with government officials (DPHE, CiCs, CMOs), UN agencies, and NGOs.
Ensure effective coordination with DPHE, INGOs, and NGOs through timely sharing and acceptance of water quality reports.
Maintain communication and collaboration with SMSD, CMO, and other focal agencies.
Strengthen networking and partnerships with key stakeholders.

Prepare and submit monthly water quality reports to CIC, CMO, sector authorities, government bodies, and relevant agencies.
Report suspected and confirmed AWD cases to health partners, WASH agencies, and the line manager.
Provide timely water quality-related documents to WASH focal points, agencies, and stakeholders.
Develop and submit weekly and monthly water quality testing (WQT) activity plans.
Identify and report operational challenges during activities and propose practical solutions.
Support procurement processes by preparing requisitions, collecting quotations, and ensuring the timely availability of required materials.
