Responsibilities & Context:
Transformer Design Development: Lead the electrical and mechanical design of power/distribution transformers for both single phase and three phase (ratings, vector groups, insulation, cooling systems, coiling, core etc.) following IEC, IEEE, ASTM etc. standard.
Standards Compliance: Ensure all designs and tests comply with international standards like IEC, IEEE, and customer specifications.
Type & Routine Testing Oversight: Supervise all testing activities including routine, type, and special tests (e.g., IR, ratio, impedance, induced voltage, lightning impulse).
Design Optimization & Cost Control: Optimize transformer design for cost, efficiency, losses, and material utilization (core, copper, insulation).
Failure Analysis & Troubleshooting: Investigate test failures or field issues and implement corrective design or process improvements.
Technical Documentation: Prepare and review drawings, design calculations, datasheets, test reports, and manuals
Test Equipment & Lab Management: Ensure proper calibration and maintenance of testing equipment (Ratio Tester, Resistance, Insulation, HV test sets, DVDF, Impulse etc.).
Quality Assurance Implementation: Establish and maintain QA/QC procedures for transformer testing and design validation.
R&D for new transformer technologies (low-loss core, eco-friendly insulation)
Digital tools (AutoCAD, FEM analysis, simulation software)
Design Knowledge:
Thermal & Dielectric Design Analysis
Perform detailed thermal modeling and insulation coordination to ensure safe temperature rise and dielectric strength.
Short-Circuit Withstand Design: Ensure transformers meet short-circuit strength requirements as per IEC / IEEE standards.
Loss Capitalization & Efficiency Improvement: Evaluate no-load and load losses with capitalization cost analysis to meet utility tender requirements.
Material Selection & Specification: Approve core materials (CRGO), conductor type, insulation systems, and oil specifications.
Insulation System Design: Develop insulation structures (solid, liquid, pressboard) for high-voltage reliability and long life.
Design Validation through Simulation: Use FEM / simulation tools for electromagnetic field, leakage flux, and mechanical stress analysis.
Prototype Development & Testing: Lead development of new designs and validate through prototype testing and performance evaluation.
Tap Changer Design Integration: Coordinate design and selection of OLTC/Off-circuit tap changers and their control schemes.
Advanced Diagnostic Testing: Oversee tests like SFRA, DGA interpretation, partial discharge, and tan delta for condition assessment.
Test Procedure Development: Develop and standardize detailed testing procedures and checklists for factory acceptance tests (FAT).
Third-Party Inspection Handling: Coordinate with inspection agencies like BUET/DUET or customer representatives from BREB/PDB/DESCO/DPDC/NESCO etc.
