Responsibilities & Context:

BRAC is an international development organisation founded in Bangladesh in 1972 that partners globally with over 100 million people living with inequality and poverty to create opportunities to realise their potential.

The Senior Project Officer, Environmental Officer will be responsible for promoting & lead the implementation of community-based environmental initiatives that promote environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and community participation within the refugee response. The role ensures effective coordination, quality implementation, and compliance with BRAC, UNHCR, and humanitarian standards.

  • Plan, implement, and monitor community-based environmental initiatives in line with the project objectives, UNHCR guidelines, and BRAC policies

  • Facilitate meaningful engagement of Rohingya youth, community volunteers, and community-based structures in environmental protection, awareness raising, and climate resilience activities

  • Organize capacity-building sessions, training, workshops, and awareness campaigns on environmental conservation, waste management, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable natural resource management

  • Support the formation and strengthening of youth-led environmental groups and promote community ownership of environmental protection initiatives

  • Coordinate environmental campaigns such as tree plantation, community clean-up drives, recycling initiatives, and ecosystem restoration activities with active participation of refugees and host communities where applicable

  • Ensure environmental activities are integrated with community-based protection approaches, promoting inclusion, participation, accountability, and safeguarding of vulnerable groups

  • Conduct community consultations, focus group discussions (FGDs), and participatory assessments to identify environmental concerns and community priorities

  • Promote behavioral change communication (BCC) through awareness materials, community events, and youth-led initiatives on environmental sustainability

  • Collaborate closely with Community-Based Protection teams, site management, WASH, Shelter, Livelihoods, and other sector partners to ensure coordinated implementation of environmental interventions

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Camp-in-Charge (CiC) offices, relevant government departments, UNHCR, partner organizations, and community leaders

  • Monitor project progress against work plans and indicators, ensuring timely achievement of environmental targets and quality standards

  • Collect, verify, analyze, and maintain project data, success stories, case studies, and lessons learned for reporting and knowledge management

  • Prepare high-quality weekly, monthly, quarterly, and donor reports, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely submission

  • Conduct regular field monitoring visits to assess the quality, effectiveness, and impact of environmental activities and recommend improvements

  • Support environmental risk assessments and identify mitigation measures for project interventions

  • Ensure meaningful participation of women, adolescents, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups in environmental activities through inclusive approaches

  • Ensure compliance with BRAC policies, humanitarian principles, safeguarding standards, Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA), Child Safeguarding, Gender Equality, and Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP)

  • Support innovation by introducing community-led and environmentally sustainable practices that enhance resilience, ownership, and long-term environmental stewardship within the refugee community

  • Ensure the safety of Programme Participants, people who come into contact with the organisation and team members from any harm, abuse, neglect, harassment and exploitation including sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA) to achieve the programme's goals of safeguarding implementation. Act as a key source of support, guidance and expertise on safeguarding for establishing a safe working environment

  • Practice, promote and endorse the issues of safeguarding policy among team members and ensure the implementation of safeguarding standards in every course of action

  • Follow the safeguarding reporting procedure in case any reportable incident takes place and encourage others to do so
