- 5–7 years of practical experience in vegetable crop breeding, particularly with local crops (tomato, brinjal, chili, okra, cucumber, bitter gourd, pumpkin, etc.).
- Hands-on work in both field trials (farmers’ fields, research stations) and controlled environments (greenhouse, polyhouse, screenhouse).
- Experience in seed company R&D or NGO/BRAC/ACI seed programs is a plus.
Skills & Knowledge
- Strong understanding of genetics, plant physiology, and local pests/diseases.
- Familiar with seed certification processes (breeder → foundation → certified) and stress-tolerant traits (heat, flood, drought).
- Skilled in trial design, data analysis, and record-keeping (Excel, SPSS, R).
- Observant, detail-oriented, patient, and physically fit for fieldwork in Bangladesh’s climate.
- Strong communication skills in Bangla and English; teamwork and problem-solving mindset.
- Bonus Skills: Molecular breeding, tissue culture, multi-location trials, and knowledge of DAE practices and local agricultural policies.
Responsibilities & Context: Job Summary
The Vegetable Seed Breeder is responsible for developing, improving, and maintaining vegetable seed varieties through breeding, selection, and evaluation. The role focuses on key traits such as yield, disease resistance, flavor, shelf life, and adaptability to local climates. This position bridges lab/greenhouse work with field trials to deliver high-quality seed varieties to farmers and markets.
Key Responsibilities
- Define breeding goals and strategies aligned with company objectives (market demand, climate, traits).
- Conduct crosses (hybridization), maintain pedigree records, and manage germplasm.
- Develop and run field and greenhouse trials to evaluate seed lines for yield, disease/pest resistance, and abiotic stress tolerance (heat, drought, etc.).
- Select lines based on performance, agronomic traits, and consumer/processor preferences (taste, size, color, texture).
- Apply experimental design and statistical analysis to interpret trial data and optimize breeding strategies.
- Manage breeder and foundation seed stock to ensure quality, purity, and supply.
- Collaborate with pathologists, molecular/genetic scientists (if available) for trait identification, molecular markers, and genomic selection.
- Maintain detailed records of crosses, pedigree, trials, and environmental data.
- Supervise and train assistants or field staff as needed.
- Stay updated on breeding technologies, methodologies, and competitor varieties.
- Prepare reports and documentation on breeding progress and outcomes.
- Ensure compliance with seed laws, regulations, and quality standards (genetic purity, germination, labeling).
