Education:
  • MBBS degree recognized by the Bangladesh Medical & Dental Council (BMDC).

  • Valid BMDC registration.

  • Postgraduate training (FCPS / MD / DCH) in Pediatrics or Neonatology will get preference.

  • Having DCH will be preferred.

  • Training in Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and Pediatric Life Support (PALS).

  • Minimum 3 years of post-internship experience in General Pediatrics or relevant field.

Responsibilities & Context:

Job Summary

The SMO in the NICU/PICU and Pediatrics & Neonatology Department is responsible for providing high-quality medical care for critically ill neonates, infants, and children. This role supports clinical operations under the guidance of consultants, leads departmental activities in their absence, and ensures effective, evidence-based practices in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and general pediatric settings.

Key Responsibilities

1. General Pediatrics

  • Provide clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care for pediatric patients in inpatient wards, emergency, and outpatient settings.

  • Manage common and complex pediatric medical conditions in accordance with standard clinical guidelines.

  • Admit, review, and discharge pediatric patients ensuring continuity of care.

  • Participate in daily ward rounds and outpatient clinics under consultant supervision.

  • Coordinate referrals to subspecialties as clinically indicated.

2. NICU Responsibilities

  • Provide medical care to neonates requiring special care and intensive monitoring.

  • Participate in neonatal resuscitation at delivery and stabilization of sick newborns.

  • Monitor ventilated neonates and those on respiratory or hemodynamic support.

  • Assist in neonatal procedures including intubation, umbilical catheterization, and IV access.

  • Ensure safe transfer, documentation, and discharge planning for NICU patients.

3. PICU Responsibilities

  • Manage critically ill pediatric patients requiring intensive care and life-support measures.

  • Monitor vital parameters, laboratory results, and response to treatment.

  • Assist in emergency procedures and life-saving interventions under consultant guidance.

  • Coordinate care with multidisciplinary ICU teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

4. Emergency & On-Call Duties

  • Provide emergency medical services for pediatric and neonatal patients during assigned shifts.

  • Act as first responder for pediatric and neonatal emergencies within the hospital.

  • Ensure prompt escalation of critical cases to consultants.

5. Clinical Governance & Quality Assurance

  • Adhere strictly to hospital policies, SOPs, and infection prevention protocols.

  • Participate in audits, morbidity and mortality meetings, and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Support patient safety, ethical practice, and risk management activities.

6. Supervision & Teamwork

  • Supervise nursing staff during duty hours.

  • Provide clinical guidance and support to team members.

  • Foster a collaborative, respectful, and patient-centered care environment.

7. Communication & Documentation

  • Communicate effectively with parents and caregivers regarding diagnosis, treatment plans, and prognosis.

  • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely medical documentation, including progress notes and discharge summaries.

  • Ensure proper medico-legal documentation when required.

8. Professional Development

  • Participate in continuing medical education (CME), training sessions, and departmental meetings.

  • Keep updated with current pediatric and neonatal clinical guidelines and best practices.

  • Contribute to teaching and mentoring activities as assigned.
