• Minimum 4 years of professional backend development experience

• Minimum 2 years in a senior, lead, or technical ownership role

• Strong database experience (PostgreSQL and/or MySQL)

• Strong DevOps, deployment, and production troubleshooting experience

• Experience with caching, queues, background jobs, and scheduled tasks

• Experience integrating third-party APIs

• Experience with headless CMS platforms or similar backend systems

• Ability to manage and support multiple active projects simultaneously

• Ability to mentor junior or mid-level developers

• Experience with Docker, Nginx, PM2, CI/CD, monitoring, backups, and rollback processes

• Familiarity with Cloudflare, DNS, CDN, and caching rules

• Experience with PWA or mobile app backend/API support is a plus

• Experience using AI-assisted coding tools (Codex, Cursor, Claude Code, or similar) is a plus

• Must be honest, direct, organised, and calm under pressure

• Must be available and responsive during required working hours

• Strong written English communication skills

Role overview:

You will work closely with the founder and existing team to improve backend systems, production processes, API integrations, deployment reliability, and development standards across several projects.

This role requires someone who can both fix issues directly and also guide others. You should be comfortable reviewing code, managing GitHub workflows, improving deployment processes, mentoring developers, and creating clear technical plans.

Core responsibilities:

• Lead backend and platform development across multiple projects

• Audit existing systems and identify technical blockers

• Improve backend APIs, databases, caching, queues, scheduled jobs, and deployment workflows

• Support third-party API integrations and backend data flows

• Improve production reliability, performance, security, and maintainability

• Manage GitHub workflows including branches, pull requests, code reviews, issues, and releases

• Improve staging/live separation and reduce deployment risk

• Support and mentor junior or mid-level developers

• Help organise technical priorities across multiple projects

• Create clear documentation, technical plans, launch checklists, and risk reports

• Communicate clearly about what is working, what is broken, what needs help, and what should be prioritised

Required experience:

• Minimum 4+ years of professional backend development experience

• Minimum 2+ years in a senior, lead, or technical ownership role

• Strong backend API development experience

• Strong database experience

• Strong DevOps, deployment, and production troubleshooting experience

• Strong GitHub experience including branches, pull requests, code reviews, issues, and release workflows

• Experience with caching, queues, background jobs, scheduled tasks, or performance optimisation

• Experience with headless CMS platforms or similar backend content/data systems

• Experience integrating third-party APIs

• Ability to manage and support multiple active projects

• Ability to mentor other developers

• Ability to self-learn unfamiliar tools quickly and document clearly

Useful additional experience:

• Node.js / Express / NestJS or similar backend frameworks

• PostgreSQL and/or MySQL

• Redis or similar caching/queue systems

• Linux server management

• Cloudflare, DNS, CDN, and caching rules

• Docker, Nginx, PM2, CI/CD, monitoring, backups, and rollback processes

• PWA or mobile app backend/API support

• AI-assisted coding tools such as Codex, Cursor, Claude Code, or similar
