The primary objective of a Business Development Electrical Engineer during power plant site visits is to identify technical opportunities, build high-level client relationships, and evaluate prospective business points that your company’s engineering solutions, equipment, or services can solve. Unlike a traditional field engineer focused on daily maintenance, this role bridges technical assessment with commercial strategy to secure new projects and contracts.
Pre-Visit Strategy & Preparation
· Analyze Plant Profiles: Review technical specs, age, asset types, and operational history of target plants (e.g., Thermal, Hydro, Solar, Gas) before traveling.
· Define Value Propositions: Identify potential technical upgrade paths, such as efficiency improvements or digital retrofits, tailored to the specific plant.
· Coordinate Client Agenda: Align with plant managers, chief electrical engineers, and procurement leads to set clear objectives for the physical walkthrough.
Technical Assessment & Opportunity Identification
· Examine Heavy Assets: Evaluate the condition of high-voltage transformers, switchgear, generators, digital drives, and protection relays for aging or obsolescence.
· Identify Inefficiencies: Pinpoint operational bottlenecks, power quality issues, thermal dissipation problems, and capacity constraints.
Client Relationship & Commercial Discovery
· Uncover Pain Points: Conduct structured interviews with plant operations teams to understand their history of forced outages, high maintenance costs, and component failures.
· Pitch Tailored Solutions: Explain how your company's technical capabilities directly address their specific uptime and efficiency challenges.
· Map Decision Makers: Identify key stakeholders, technical influencers, and final procurement authorities within the plant's corporate structure.
· Gather Market Intelligence: Note competitor footprints, existing long-term service agreements (LTSAs), and upcoming regional tender timelines.
Post-Visit Proposal & Deal Closure
· Draft Technical Reports: Convert on-site observations into comprehensive technical audit summaries and asset-health findings for internal engineering teams.
· Develop Scopes of Work: Collaborate with the estimation team to build Bill of Quantities (BOQ), pricing strategies, and tailored project proposals.
· Present Commercial Proposals: Deliver technical presentations to the client's executive suite to demonstrate the return on investment (ROI) of your proposed solution.
Support Bid Evaluations: Guide the technical clarification process during tender and contract negotiations to secure contract signatures.
