Job Context:
∎ The Waste Attendant will report to the EH Assistant and will be primarily responsible for collection, transportation and disposal of all medical wastes as directed by the EH Assistant. He/she will work closely with the hygienists in both the red and green zone to ensure that medical waste is well segregated. Staff safety is a top priority and strict adherence to infection control procedures is necessary to prevent transmission of the disease. Personal protective equipment should be worn at all times in isolation units strictly in accordance with infection control protocols.

Job Responsibilities:
∎ Primary Responsibilities:
∎ Ensure that all medical wastes on the compound are collected and disposed-off into the solid waste disposal pits.
∎ Ensure that all drainage trenches are cleaned daily and wastewater flows to soak pits or secondary drainage channels.
∎ Educate staff and patients on safe disposal of various wastes within the high risk area and low risk zones.
∎ Ensure that all patients’ buckets for food, plastics and medical wastes are emptied and wastes disposed into the appropriate waste disposal points and buckets cleaned and returned to the patients’ beds.
∎ Collect and dispose all medical wastes (Sharps and non-sharps) to the appropriate pits.
∎ Monitor the waste levels in waste disposal pits and ensure that waste is incinerated regularly (at least every 2 days).
∎ Notify the Environmental Health Assistant if any of the waste disposal pits is filled up to 1.0m from the ground level such that a replacement can be dug.
∎ This position will enter the red zone of the Triages and Isolation facilities.
∎ Staff Supervision & Development:
∎ No staff management responsibility.
∎ Adhere to and act in accordance with the IRC Global HR Policies and Procedures.
∎ Grant Monitoring & Reporting:
∎ Monitor filling levels of medical waste collection and disposal facilities.
∎ Monitor the waste segregation practices.
∎ Monitor availability of waste bins and plastic bin liners.
∎ Other:
∎ Consistently and proactively monitor/assess the safety and security of the team; promptly reporting concerns or incidents to the EH Assistant and liaising with Health staffs and other external parties as required to maintain/enhance the security environment for IRC programs.
∎ Any other duties as assigned by the supervisor to enable and develop IRC programs.

∎ Competent in communication skills, effective in representation and liaison
∎ Works well in and promotes teamwork, comfortable in a multi-cultural environment, flexible and able to handle pressure well
∎ Knowledge of the local languages
