Responsibilities & Context:

Duty Station: Camp 5 & 12, Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar

Reports to: Senior Medical Officer

Accountable to: Clinical Coordinator

Position Summary

The Senior Staff Nurse will be responsible for providing safe, high-quality, timely, and patient-centred nursing care at the Primary Health Care Centre (PHCC) in the Rohingya Response. The position holder will provide clinical nursing care, support patient assessment and management, administer prescribed treatments and medications, monitor patient conditions, and ensure appropriate documentation and referral.

The Senior Staff Nurse will also provide day-to-day clinical guidance and support to Staff Nurses and other assigned nursing personnel, assist in coordinating nursing activities and duty rosters, and contribute to maintaining clinical quality, patient safety, Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), and continuity of care. The position holder will work closely with the Clinical In-Charge, Medical Officers, Midwife Lead, Midwives, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Nutrition, MHPSS, Community Health, and other relevant teams.

Key Responsibilities

Nursing Care & Patient Management

  • Provide comprehensive, safe, respectful, and patient-centred nursing care to patients attending the PHCC.

  • Conduct nursing assessments, including taking and recording vital signs, patient history, symptoms, and other relevant clinical information within the scope of practice.

  • Monitor patients' conditions and identify changes or deterioration requiring immediate clinical attention.

  • Administer prescribed medicines, treatments, procedures, and other nursing interventions accurately and safely.

  • Assist Medical Officers and other healthcare providers during patient assessment, examination, treatment, and emergency management.

  • Ensure patients receive appropriate nursing care, observation, counselling, and follow-up.

  • Maintain patient dignity, privacy, confidentiality, and non-discriminatory care at all times.

Clinical Assessment, Triage & Referral Support

  • Support the assessment and prioritization of patients according to clinical urgency.

  • Identify danger signs, severe illness, and patients requiring urgent medical attention.

  • Ensure immediate escalation of emergency or deteriorating patients to the Medical Officer, Clinical In-Charge, or other appropriate healthcare provider.

  • Provide initial nursing care and stabilization within the scope of practice and facility capacity.

  • Support the preparation and transfer of patients requiring referral.

  • Ensure appropriate nursing documentation and communication during patient referral and transfer.

  • Provide counselling to patients and caregivers regarding referral procedures and follow-up requirements.

Clinical Supervision & Team Support

  • Provide day-to-day guidance, mentoring, and technical support to Staff Nurses and other assigned nursing personnel.

  • Support the orientation of newly recruited nursing staff.

  • Assist in allocating daily nursing duties and ensuring adequate coverage of assigned service areas.

  • Support the preparation and implementation of nursing duty rosters and shift schedules.

  • Monitor adherence to nursing standards, clinical protocols, and organizational procedures.

  • Identify knowledge or performance gaps among nursing staff and provide on-the-job coaching.

  • Escalate significant performance, staffing, clinical, or operational concerns to the appropriate supervisor.

Medication Administration & Patient Safety

  • Administer prescribed medicines safely and accurately according to approved prescriptions and clinical protocols.

  • Verify patient identity and follow applicable medication administration principles.

  • Monitor patients for adverse drug reactions, allergies, or other medication-related concerns.

  • Immediately report medication errors, adverse events, or near misses according to organizational procedures.

  • Coordinate with Medical Officers and Pharmacy staff regarding medication-related concerns.

  • Promote safe medication practices and rational use of medicines within the nursing scope of practice.

  • Ensure accurate documentation of medicines and treatments administered.

Clinical Procedures & Treatment Support

  • Perform approved nursing procedures within the scope of professional practice.

  • Prepare patients and required equipment for examinations and clinical procedures.

  • Assist Medical Officers and other healthcare providers during procedures and treatment.

  • Ensure appropriate preparation, cleaning, and safe use of medical equipment.

  • Monitor patients before, during, and after procedures as required.

  • Identify and report complications or changes in patient condition promptly.

  • Ensure appropriate documentation of nursing procedures and interventions.

Emergency Care & Stabilization

  • Provide immediate nursing assessment and emergency care to patients presenting with acute or life-threatening conditions.

  • Support initial stabilization and emergency management within the scope of practice and available facility capacity.

  • Assist the Medical Officer and clinical team during emergency situations.

  • Ensure emergency equipment and essential supplies are available and appropriately maintained in assigned service areas.

  • Participate in emergency preparedness activities, drills, and response.

  • Support timely referral or transfer of patients requiring higher-level care.

  • Maintain accurate documentation of emergency nursing care and patient transfer.

Infection Prevention & Control (IPC)

  • Follow and promote Infection Prevention and Control procedures within all assigned clinical areas.

  • Ensure proper hand hygiene, standard precautions, and appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • Support the implementation of appropriate cleaning, disinfection, and waste management procedures.

  • Identify and report IPC risks, breaches, or gaps.

  • Support measures to prevent healthcare-associated infections.

  • Ensure appropriate infection prevention measures during outbreaks and public health emergencies.

  • Promote adherence to IPC standards among nursing and support staff.

Clinical Quality & Patient Safety

  • Ensure nursing care is provided in accordance with approved national guidelines, organizational protocols, standard operating procedures, and professional nursing standards.

  • Promote evidence-based nursing practices and high standards of patient care.

  • Identify clinical risks, patient safety concerns, or service delivery gaps and report them to the appropriate supervisor.

  • Participate in clinical audits, case reviews, supportive supervision, and quality improvement activities.

  • Support the implementation of corrective actions and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Promote a culture of accountability, learning, patient safety, and continuous improvement.

Clinical Documentation & Patient Records

  • Maintain accurate, complete, timely, and confidential nursing documentation.

  • Record vital signs, nursing assessments, treatments, medicines administered, patient observations, and follow-up instructions.

  • Ensure proper maintenance of nursing registers, treatment records, and other required clinical documents.

  • Support accurate completion of referral and transfer documentation.

  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with organizational data protection procedures.

  • Review nursing documentation and support staff to address identified gaps or errors.

Coordination with Multidisciplinary Teams

  • Work closely with the Clinical In-Charge, Medical Officers, Midwife Lead, Midwives, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Nutrition, MHPSS, Community Health, and other relevant teams.

  • Coordinate patient care, investigations, treatment, referrals, and follow-up.

  • Participate in clinical meetings, case discussions, nursing meetings, and programme review meetings.

  • Communicate clinical concerns, service delivery challenges, staffing issues, and patient safety concerns to the appropriate supervisor.

  • Support coordination with referral facilities and other healthcare providers when required.

  • Promote effective teamwork and communication across all PHCC service areas.

Medicines, Medical Supplies & Equipment

  • Monitor the availability of essential medicines, medical supplies, and nursing equipment within assigned service areas.

  • Ensure appropriate storage, handling, and use of nursing and medical supplies.

  • Report shortages, stock-outs, damaged items, or unsafe equipment promptly.

  • Support proper accountability and rational use of medical supplies.

  • Ensure emergency equipment and essential supplies are regularly checked and maintained.

  • Coordinate with Pharmacy, Supply Chain, and relevant teams regarding essential clinical requirements.

Health Information & Reporting

  • Ensure accurate recording of nursing and patient care activities.

  • Maintain and update relevant registers, treatment records, and service delivery information.

  • Support the preparation of daily, weekly, monthly, and other required reports.

  • Assist in reviewing data for completeness, accuracy, and consistency.

  • Report unusual disease patterns, clinical incidents, or significant public health concerns through appropriate channels.

  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and programme information.

Capacity Building & Professional Development

  • Participate in clinical training, refresher sessions, case discussions, and professional development activities.

  • Support on-the-job coaching and mentoring of Staff Nurses and other assigned nursing personnel.

Job Other Benifits:
    • Monthly Gross Salary: BDT 59,545 /= (Only)

    • Bonus and other benefits: 10% of the monthly gross salary.
