Experience

• Minimum 7–12 years of practical experience in roll grinding operations in a paper mill or heavy industrial manufacturing plant.
• Hands-on experience in operating manual roll grinding machines.
• Experience in roll measurement, balancing and surface finishing.

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

• Strong knowledge of roll grinding methods, tolerances, machine settings and safety protocols.
• Ability to read and understand technical drawings, roll specifications and measurement data.
• Good understanding of paper machine rolls and their functional requirements.
• Strong teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills.

Position Purpose

To operate, maintain and supervise the roll grinding machine to ensure accurate grinding, smooth finishing and precise calibration of paper machine rolls. The position ensures optimal roll quality, reduces machine downtime and supports smooth paper production. The Operator must have sound technical knowledge of roll grinding processes, machine alignment, measurement tools and safety standards applicable in a paper mill environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Operate roll grinding machines to regrind, polish and finish press rolls, dryer rolls, suction rolls and other paper machine rolls as per specification.
• Measure roll diameter, face length and roundness.
• Set up roll grinding machine parameters including speed, feed, angle and grinding wheel alignment.
• Inspect rolls before and after grinding to ensure required tolerances and surface quality.
• Perform regular maintenance, cleaning and lubrication of roll grinding machines and related equipment.
• Monitor machine performance and ensure stable, accurate and vibration-free grinding operations.
• Prepare roll grinding reports, measurement records and documentation after each job.
• Detect defects such as cracks, uneven wear and imbalance or surface irregularities and report them to the maintenance engineer.
• Handle grinding wheels, mounting and balancing as per safety and operational guidelines.
• Maintain proper stock of grinding wheels, tools, lubricants and consumables.
• Follow safety protocols when operating heavy rolls, cranes, hoists and rotating machinery.
• Coordinate with Production, Mechanical and Quality departments for timely roll delivery.
• Assist in alignment, balancing and installation of rolls on the paper machine when required.
• Support preventive and corrective maintenance initiatives of roll grinding and mechanical sections.
• Maintain a clean, safe and organized working environment around the roll grinding area.
• Perform any other duties as assigned by the management related to mechanical maintenance and plant operation.
