Job Context:

∎ The Legal Adviser advises the delegation, and particularly the Protection department, national and/or international legal matters, as pertaining to the delegation`s Protection activities. S/he initiates and formulates strategies to address identified issues. S/he supervises and guides research on and analysis of specific legal matters and broader sectors of the national legal system relevant to Protection objectives.
Job Responsibilities:
∎ Analyses, advises & guides on the applicable national & international legal frameworks in context to local ICRC activities & strategies
∎ Prepares/drafts notes/analyses & contributes with legal aspects/issues to different reports/documents
∎ Supports detention team with research on judicial processes & acts (i.e: forensics team, sexual violence operations team), assists in meeting with relevant judicial authorities in achieving ICRC objectives related to protection/legislation formulation & implementation.
∎ Supports the RFL/Missing/Forensics/Sexual violence operations team with research on relevant codes in the domestic law pertaining to the activities to restore and maintain family links, the rights of the families of the missing, inheritance laws, and all laws relating to forensic activities.
∎ Supports IHL dissemination activities directed at specialized audiences and the public at large and supports the implementation of strategies, programmes and action plans related to IHL treaty participation, the development of relevant domestic legal and policy frameworks and mechanisms for their implementation, when necessary, and in coordination with the Legal Adviser 2 (IHL)
∎ Advises on socio-political and legal aspects related to delegation strategy and operations
∎ Coordinates and supervises external consultancies on legal issues & Supports the head of department (Protection Coordinator) in any other task as required, pertaining to the Protection Department's activities
∎ Regular reporting as & when necessary.
Additional Requirements:
∎ Affiliation/registration the bar in Bangladesh
∎ Fluent command of English and of the local language (including legal drafting skills)
∎ Computer proficiency
∎ Professional requirements:
∎ 1-3 years' working experience in a similar function, within or outside the ICRC, including in government or the judicial sector.
∎ Confirmed teaching/dissemination experience
∎ Legal drafting experience
∎ Personal qualities for the position:
∎ Excellent sense of responsibility and confidentiality.
∎ Ability to empathize to people who are in vulnerable situation in the country.
∎ Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, respecting the established framework.
∎ Ability to define priorities.
∎ Ability to adapt to and work in a multicultural team environment.
∎ Team spirit and capacity to integrate a multidisciplinary approach.
