1. Product Development & Pre-Production Engineering
Tech Pack Evaluation & Feasibility Analysis: Review client or design department Tech Packs. Assess the constructability of the design based on the specific characteristics of the woven fabric (e.g., drape, weight, shrinkage, and fraying tendencies). Propose engineering modifications to improve sewability without compromising the design intent.
Pattern Making & Grading: Create master patterns with high precision. Since woven fabrics do not stretch, exact measurements, dart placements, and grainline alignments are critical. Grade patterns for all required size sets.
Marker Making & Fabric Utilization: Optimize marker layouts to maximize fabric yield. For specialized woven fabrics (e.g., stripes, checks, or directional naps like corduroy), create complex match-stripe/match-check markers to minimize waste while ensuring aesthetic alignment.
Sample Development & Fit Approval: Guide sample machinists in constructing proto, size, and Pre-Production (PP) samples. Conduct fit sessions, analyze garment measurements against the spec sheet, and adjust patterns accordingly.
Documentation (BOM & SOP): Generate accurate Bills of Materials (BOM). Draft comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and construction manuals, detailing stitch types (e.g., 301, 504), SPI (Stitches Per Inch), seam types (e.g., French seams, flat-felled seams), and specific folding/pressing instructions.
2. Production Preparation & Process Engineering
Fabric Shrinkage & Relaxation Management: Woven fabrics (especially natural fibers) have varying shrinkage rates. Technical staff must track and calculate shrinkage percentages after washing/steaming and adjust patterns accordingly to ensure final garment dimensions remain within tolerance.
Tooling, Attachments & Template Design: Design and fabricate specialized sewing attachments (e.g., binding folders, hemming guides, collar templates) to standardize operations, reduce skill dependency, and ensure uniform quality across all operators.
Time Study & Line Balancing (IE Function): Conduct time and motion studies to establish Standard Allowed Minutes (SAM) or Standard Minute Value (SMV) for each operation. Balance the production line to eliminate bottlenecks, ensuring a smooth flow of WIP (Work in Progress).
Pre-Production (PP) Meetings: Lead technical handover meetings with production managers, line supervisors, and QA teams. Highlight critical construction points, potential risk areas, and specific quality standards for the upcoming bulk run.
3. On-Site Technical Support & Troubleshooting
First Piece Approval: Inspect and approve the "First Piece" off the production line before bulk sewing begins. Verify dimensions, construction methods, visual aesthetics, and hand-feel against the approved PP sample.
Real-time Problem Solving: Patrol the sewing and pressing floors to resolve immediate technical issues. Common woven issues include seam puckering, twisted side seams (spirality), uneven hems, collar asymmetry, and fabric distortion.
Pressing & Finishing Optimization: Woven garments rely heavily on tailoring and pressing (often summarized in the industry as "30% sewing, 70% ironing"). Technical staff must optimize the use of steam irons, vacuum tables, and pressing molds to achieve the required 3D shape (e.g., shirt collars, suit lapels, trouser creases) without causing fabric shine or scorching.
4. Quality Assurance & Continuous Improvement
Quality Standard Formulation: Assist the QA department in defining critical Point of Measure (POM) tolerances and AQL (Acceptable Quality Limit) inspection criteria specific to the woven garment category.
Root Cause Analysis & CAPA: Investigate bulk quality defects. Perform Root Cause Analysis (e.g., using the 5 Whys or Fishbone diagrams) and implement Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) to prevent recurrence.
Process Innovation & Automation: Introduce advanced machinery (e.g., automatic pocket setters, auto-attach buttonholers, CNC fabric cutters) and software (3D sampling like CLO3D) to modernize the factory, reduce lead times, and lower labor costs.
