✅ Responsibilities of a Structural Engineer (Detail Engineering Assessment Focus)
---
1. Structural Design & Detailing
- Perform detailed design and analysis of RCC and steel members (beams, slabs, columns, shear walls, braces, trusses, connections).
- Design foundation systems (shallow, deep, raft, pile) based on soil report.
- Design structural retrofitting or strengthening if DEA shows deficiencies.
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes: BNBC, ACI, ASCE, UBC, IS, AISC, etc.
2. Detail Engineering Assessment (DEA)
- Conduct structural assessment of existing buildings per BNBC, Accord, RSC, or Alliance standards.
- Review as-built drawings; verify discrepancies through site measurements.
- Identify non-conformities: load path issues, under-reinforced members, overstressed areas, inadequate bracing.
- Run DEA models in ETABS/STAAD to check for overstressed conditions under gravity/seismic/wind loads.
- Prepare DEA reports with recommendations (retrofitting, reduction of loading, occupancy change, etc.).
---
3. Structural Analysis & Software
- Build and analyze structural models in ETABS, STAAD.Pro, SAFE, SAP2000, Robot, or RAM Connection.
- Perform linear, nonlinear, response-spectrum, and time-history analysis if required.
- Check torsional irregularities, lateral stability, and storey drift.
---
4. Drawing & Documentation
- Prepare or validate structural working drawings and reinforcement detailing.
- Review and cross-check shop drawings, bar bending schedules (BBS), and connection details for steel.
- Ensure drawing compliance with DEA findings and recommendations.
---
5. Site Inspection & Verification
- Conduct on-site investigation to validate structural conditions.
- Perform concrete core tests, rebar scanning, UPV/rebound hammer tests (if needed).
- Check load paths, support conditions, and anchorage issues.
- Monitor retrofitting execution as per DEA outcomes.
---
6. Technical Reporting
- Prepare detailed DEA reports including:
- Executive summary
- Structural adequacy summary
- Design load vs. capacity charts
- Drawings and retrofit proposals (if needed)
- Present findings to RMG clients, compliance bodies, or internal management.
7. Structural Design & Analysis
- Design RCC and steel structures using codes (BNBC, ACI, IS, AISC).
- Perform structural analysis using software (ETABS, STAAD Pro, SAFE, SAP2000).
Coordination & Compliance*
- Coordinate with architects, MEP, and geotechnical engineers.
- Adhere to compliance audit requirements (RSC/Accord/Alliance/RCC guideline).
8. Preparation of Drawings
- Prepare design/drawing details (GA, reinforcement, connection details).
- Coordinate with architectural and MEP teams to avoid clashes.
9. Site Coordination
- Provide technical support during construction.
- Review and approve structural works as per drawings/specs.
10. BOQ & Estimation
- Prepare structural BOQs and quantity estimations for steel and concrete.
11. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain design calculation sheets, reports, and drawing logs.
- Communicate with clients, contractors, and consultants.
