• At least a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or a related field; substantial equivalent professional experience may be considered.

• Age At least 30 years

• At least 3 years of professional software development experience, including substantial hands-on work with Python and production web applications.

• Strong experience with Python 3, Django (including Django REST Framework) or FastAPI, REST API design, SQL and a relational database such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.

• Practical experience with Git, automated testing, Linux-based environments and deploying or maintaining live applications.

• Experience in system design, troubleshooting, code review and supporting other developers.

Skills and Competencies

• Ability to turn complex operational requirements into simple, dependable software.

• Sound judgment on application security, data privacy, performance and maintainability.

• Experience with Docker, cloud platforms, background task queues, front-end integration or data-intensive applications will be an advantage.

• Working knowledge of Node.js, TypeScript and NestJS will be an added advantage.

Position Overview

The Senior Software Developer (Python) will lead the design, development and maintenance of web applications and APIs. This is a hands-on role covering technical design, implementation, testing, deployment and code review. The developer will work with product and business colleagues to clarify requirements, deliver valuable features and mentor other developers.

Key Responsibilities

Application Development

• Design, develop and maintain Python-based web applications, APIs and background tasks using frameworks such as Django, Django REST Framework (DRF) or FastAPI.

• Contribute to secure, maintainable backend modules and REST APIs built with Node.js, TypeScript and NestJS where projects require it.

• Translate user requirements into clear technical designs, delivery estimates and maintainable code.

• Design and optimise relational databases, write efficient queries and manage schema migrations safely.

• Integrate applications with approved third-party services and build clear, well-documented interfaces between systems (e.g. OpenAPI/Swagger).

Quality, Security and Deployment

• Write meaningful automated tests (e.g. with pytest), review code and resolve defects, performance issues and production incidents.

• Apply secure development practices in line with OWASP guidelines, including access control, input validation, protection of sensitive data and careful management of secrets.

• Use Git, CI/CD pipelines (e.g. GitHub Actions or GitLab CI), containers (Docker) and deployment tools to release and monitor applications in collaboration with relevant colleagues or vendors.

• Maintain technical documentation, deployment instructions and clear records of major changes.

Collaboration and Technical Leadership

• Work with product owners, designers, clients and business colleagues to prioritise features and improve usability.

• Guide junior developers through technical feedback, code review and practical mentoring.

• Communicate progress, risks and trade-offs clearly; help the team choose solutions that can be maintained over time.
