Job Responsibilities:
∎ The Assistant Legal Advisor (ALA) is the deputy to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) OPDAT Resident Legal Advisors (RLAs), advising the RLAs on criminal law, legislative reform, policy, and political issues affecting the DOJ-OPDAT program.
∎ OPDAT provides assistance to the Bangladeshi government on criminal justice reform through capacity building and skill development training for judges, prosecutors, and investigators, as well as legislative and judicial reform.
∎ The ALA manages and maintains contacts and meets regularly with Bangladeshi government officials and interlocutors to advocate for OPDAT programs, as well as for OPDAT's mission to foster criminal justice reform.
∎ In addition, the ALA will provide information and legal guidance to the RLAs, assist with programmatic activities, plan and organize conferences and trainings, review, analyze, and translate legislation, policy information and legal initiatives that affect OPDAT programs.
∎ The ALA advises the RLAs on the framework of the Bangladesh legal system and provides suggestions for improvements that can be fostered through OPDAT programs.
∎ The ALA helps plan legislative and institutional reform initiatives; and supports the Administrative Assistant and Project Assistant in their duties.

Additional Requirements:
∎ Minimum 3 years of experience as an attorney in Bangladesh or in the Bangladeshi justice sector is required.
∎ Level IV (Fluent) speaking/reading/writing English is required.
∎ Level IV (Fluent) speaking/reading/writing Bangla is required.
∎ Must have an in-depth knowledge of legal vocabulary in each language.
∎ Must be able to interpret and translate from one language to the other as required. This may be tested.
