Job Context:
∎ Community Development Centre (CODEC) is a leading development organization that has been working in the coastal areas of Bangladesh since 1985 for the development of vulnerable coastal people and provides solutions to social, agricultural, and environmental challenges. With a motto ‘Journey with Coastal Struggle’: CODEC is to create opportunities for those coastal people who live in poverty, empowering the disadvantaged, increasing economic opportunity, and sustaining natural resources so that every people living in the coastal area of Bangladesh can enjoy the same pride and dignity. Currently, CODEC has eight broad thematic areas for executing its work as –Activism along with the Agricultural, Fishery, Dairy and Horticulture Value Chain; Access to Justice; Children, Adolescent and Youth Development (Education, Leadership, Skill, Moral and Cultural Behaviour); Health and Nutrition; Climate Emergency, Biodiversity and Disaster Management; Development Services for Rohingya and Host Community; CODEC as Social Entrepreneurship & Micro-Finance Program. CODEC has implemented nearly 200 development projects in mentioned thematic areas in the last 36 years of its journey. CODEC is now working in about 905 Coastal Unions, 73 Coastal Upazilas, 13 Coastal Districts and 2 City Corporations in 3 Divisions of Bangladesh. Now, it is serving more than 1.5 million targeted members in the coastal areas of Bangladesh through more than 4,000 staff.
∎ Under the thematic area of Climate Change and Disaster, CODEC has been implementing a project named: "Nature conservation through livelihoods improvements (Nature and Life) Project". The goal of the project is ‘Restoration of degraded natural environment and well-being of host communities in the TWS landscapes’. The key objectives of the project are - the restoration of degraded ecosystems in the sanctuary, livelihoods development of natural resources dependent host community households, and strengthening the capacity of Co-management organizations and their sub-units e.g., PFs, VCFs, CPGs, and ERTs, Eco-guides, etc. as well as CODEC. The project is helping GoB to formulate the Protected Area (PA) Management Rules 2017 and thus institutionalized Co-management, as an approach for biodiversity conservation in PAs with an expansion of ecotourism in the area. There were established two turtle hatcheries as an initiative of the project activity object to turtle conservation in nature, moreover, has taken an attempt to conduct a detailed study on "Turtle Conservation on the beach area from Sonadia Island to Saint Martin Island."
Job Responsibilities:
∎ USAID funded ‘Nature conservation through livelihoods improvements (Nature and Life) Project’, a fourth-generation project for Co-management in Teknaf Wildlife Sanctuary (TWS), Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar is being implemented from May 2020 and will end on April 2023. CODEC has been considered as a direct implementation organization by USAID’s assessment.
∎ 1. Objective of the study:
∎ Identify the available turtle species of the beach area from Sonadia Island to Saint Martin Island
∎ Figure out the total number of turtle hatcheries (Government, INGO, NGO, Private, Research Organization) are found in the beach area from Sonadia Island to Saint Martin Island
∎ Quantify the total species-wise hatchlings were found in the last 5 years.
∎ Identify the existing problems/obstacles for the turtle nesting/hatching and conservation in the beach area.
∎ Provide possible suggestions for ex-situ and in-situ conservation
∎ Initiative to take published article in a journal.
∎ 2. Study area:
∎ The beach area from Sonadia Island to Saint Martin Island, Cox’s Bazar.
∎ 3. Expected Output:
∎ Fulfill the expected proposed objectives.
∎ 4. Estimated Duration:
∎ Maximum 90 days from March 2022.
Additional Requirements:
∎ Age 40 to 50 years
∎ Both males and females are allowed to apply
∎ Should have published articles/journals on research works.
∎ S/he should have more than 10 years experiences in performing research work including turtle/tortoise study.
Salary:
∎ Negotiable
∎ An honorarium of TK. 300,000 (Three Lac Only) will be paid excluding VAT. The amount will be paid vide account payee cheque in, 50% the middle of the work and 50% at the submission of the final report. Tax shall be deducted as per government rules.
