Job Context:
∎ Introduction and background: Heifer began working in Bangladesh in 2012. And aiming to reach 400,000 small holder farmers by FY2030. Heifer Project International Bangladesh promotes beef, goat, dairy and vegetables value chains. Programmatic approach focusses on quality production and productivity, promoting people, profit and planet and building market linkages to support smallholder farmers to expand their business and achieve a sustainable living income.
∎ Over the years, through Heifer support, self-help groups have organized themselves into cooperatives/farmers owned agri-business to access affordable inputs, technical and financial services, product aggregation, and marketing. These farmers owned agri-business also serve to train on leadership development, financial management, organizational development, conflict management and negotiation skills on leadership and help members access larger markets. Considering the impact and lesson learnt, Heifer Bangladesh will expand their program in Jessore area on vegetable subsector to achieve living income benchmark.
∎ Objectives of the assignment: To create evidence for scaleup the country program in Jashore district focusing on vegetable sub sector
∎ Duration: Initial contract will be made for 06 months may be extended based on satisfactory performances and availability of fund. This position is based in Jashore District and will provide support in the other working areas.
Job Responsibilities:
∎ Serve as a focal point of Heifer International Bangladesh Office to select potential areas of Jessore district for vegetable production and relevant stakeholders at the locality for developing supply chain for national & export market on vegetable & fruits sub sector.
∎ Identify key opportunities and underlying issues for vegetable business
∎ Assist Heifer Bangladesh Country Office for developing actionable project proposal that best serve to unlock potential, minimize challenges to accelerate the living income of small holder farmers.
∎ Provide technical backstopping to vegetables producers through linkage with public and private sector to solve technical problems that inhibit production and productivity.
∎ Capacity building of vegetable farmers on globally accepted sustainable vegetable/horticulture production, farm management, good practices, food safety and hygiene, better social and environmental practices at community level.
∎ Provide technical training sessions for farmers, service provider, project partner staff
∎ Promote new technologies at the farmer level to enhance production and quality.
∎ Enterprise development, Market development and research:
∎ Demonstration, field trails, field days, exposer visit etc. on vegetables and fruits sub sector
∎ Directly work with private sector and public sector for increasing farmer access to the National & Export market and capacity building of local service provider.
∎ Technical skills on Safe food production, post-harvest handling and marketing
∎ Apply systemic change on market development approach
∎ Communicate and negotiate with the market actors in value chains at national and regional markets; jointly develop MOUs and operational guidelines.
∎ Partnership development & Formation of Cooperative as community organization:
∎ Ability to work closely with project partners, women farmers’ self-help group and Cooperative as community organization.
∎ Facilitate linkages between Producers organizations and business development services and access to finance opportunities.
∎ Program Planning and Implementation:
∎ Prepare Detail Implementation Plan (DIP), budget, training plan, and procurement plan.
∎ Work closely with partners to develop work plan and milestone-based deliverables that align with the activity’s work plans.
∎ Ensure timely implementation of the project activities
∎ Networking with Public and Private sectors stakeholders:
∎ Maintain network with appropriate counterparts-private sectors, Department of Agriculture, BARI, BINA, SRDI, Universities and other relevant organizations, GoB officials.
∎ Link project participants with public & private sector extension service providers, market actors, food processors, financial institutions and follow up the establish required linkages.
∎ Organize and facilitate demonstration plot
Additional Requirements:
∎ Ability to work independently with a very good speed.
∎ Minimum seven years of proven experience on vegetable sector with production and marketing skills.
∎ Proven ability to program implementation, capacity building of Farmers’ organization.
∎ Minimum 07 years of proven experiences on vegetable sector; preferably with a specific focus on agriculture market systems.
∎ Experience working with USAID and Feed the Future donor programming
∎ Good interpersonal skills, honesty, and commitment to excellence.
∎ Ability to establish and maintain effective, sustainable relationships with local administration, relevant stakeholder and business community.
∎ Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
∎ Demonstrates leadership, versatility, and integrity.
∎ Written and verbal communication skills.Computer Literacy (MS-Word, Excel, Power Point etc.);
∎ Have skills on effective communication and report writing.
∎ Strong communication, convincing and interpersonal skills;
∎ Ability to learn quickly and adapt fast to the environmen
