∎ About the Fellowship:
∎ The geographical significance of Bangladesh, situated downstream of the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna basin, highlights its dependence on this massive river system for freshwater resources, agriculture, hydropower, and biodiversity. The basin, a lifeline for the region, supports the livelihoods of millions but faces challenges such as geopolitical tensions, freshwater depletion, and climate change impacts.
∎ Despite being transboundary, the management of the GBM basin is country-centric, leading to increased stress on freshwater resources. Predictions indicate a substantial decline in renewable water, exacerbating conflicts over access. The Transboundary Rivers of South Asia (TROSA) initiative, running until 2021, focused on inclusive water governance, community-led river management, responsible sand mining, and transboundary trade.
∎ Keeping this aspect in mind, Oxfam in Bangladesh is introducing a Student Fellowship (grants) for two (02) students on their post-graduate level research/thesis paper through TROSA Phase 2: Rivers, Rights, and Resilience (T2:3R) project that works to support climate-resilient livelihoods for vulnerable natural resource-dependent communities of the GBM basin.
