Project Summary:
Bangladesh is highly vulnerable to climate change, experiencing impacts such as drought, salinity intrusion, floods, and cyclones. At the same time, intensive agricultural practices, including excessive use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and groundwater irrigation, have degraded soil health and reduced organic matter content. To address these challenges, the Christian Commission for Development in Bangladesh (CCDB) has introduced biochar technology through an improved cookstove that simultaneously cooks food and produces biochar from waste biomass. Biochar is a stable form of carbon that enhances soil fertility, improves soil health, and supports climate change mitigation and adaptation. Additionally, women using these cookstoves generate income by selling biochar to farmers and fertilizer dealers, promoting financial independence. The project is currently implemented in Shibalaya (Manikgonj) and Manda (Naogaon), with a primary focus now on expanding the marketing of biochar.
