Job Context:
∎ Introduction and background: Heifer International started working in Bangladesh since 2012 after being registered by the Bangladesh NGO Affairs Bureau. Heifer International Bangladesh (HIB) is implementing programs in collaboration with the Government of Bangladesh (GoB), local NGO partners, private sector, and civil society organizations (CSO). To date, HIB has supported 46,750 smallholder farming families in Rajshahi, Natore, Sirajganj, Tangail, Kishoreganj, and Jashore districts of Bangladesh. HIB focuses on beef, goat, vegetable, and flowers as primary value chains and dairy, poultry, and high-value fruits as secondary value chains to support women smallholder farmers to achieve sustainable living incomes and lead dignified, self-reliant lives. HIB projects strengthen local communities and ecosystems in the short, medium, and long term, to enable farmers to build income-generating food and farming businesses, while protecting and restoring the environment, ensuring long-term agricultural productivity. Our current programs also focus on improving food and nutrition security through agriculture innovation and inclusive markets.
∎ Objectives of the Assignment: The Livestock lth Expert will facilitate the development and adoption of innovative technologies along the livestock value chain (animal nutrition, animal breeding and genetics, animal health and production management, processing, packaging, and cold chain maintenance). S/he will also be responsible to collaborate with the government, related private sector and other development projects to provide further support to livestock enterprises, bring efficiency in the value chain and increase profitability. S/he will work closely with academic and research institutions in research and development and generate new knowledge in all domains of livestock development.
∎ Scope of Work:
∎ Serve as technical lead for livestock value chain in program/project development.
∎ Develop mechanisms to build the capacity of staff, project partners, Community Agro-Vet Entrepreneurs (CAVEs)/technicians, cooperatives, and farmers to improve livestock value chain activities, along with follow-up and backstopping.
∎ Promote climate smart livestock production practices.
∎ Develop tools and techniques to identify One Health core competencies at the Signature Program level.
∎ Design/develop/deliver training curricula and contents based on the required competencies.
∎ Establish/ nurture relationships with private sector in production input/services (feed, vaccines, pharmaceuticals, insurance, seed animals, etc.) and postproduction (transport, dairy, meat companies, etc.) and connect them with farmers and the cooperatives.
∎ DURATION: Initial contract will be made for 06 months, may be extended based on satisfactory performances and availability of fund. This position is based in Sirajgani District and will provide support in the other working areas of Heifer Bangladesh.
Job Responsibilities:
∎ Deliverables:
∎ Assess the capacity of current Community Agro-Vet Entrepreneurs (CAVEs), identify the gaps, and develop plans to address the gaps.
∎ Design and implement the workshop on one health at District & National level.
∎ Awareness Campaign on safe food one health, Zoonoses with different stakeholder and IEC materials development.
∎ Ensure climate smart livestock production practices are adopted by the communities.
∎ Support in building capacity of CAVEs, partners, entrepreneurs, value chain actors, cooperatives in increasing livestock production.
∎ Introduce innovative technology through build partnership with Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute-BLRI
∎ Recommend and facilitate to implement breed improvement strategies for the communities in partnership with private sector and Department of Livestock Services.
∎ Develop butcher sales center and capacity building of butcher to ensure hygiene practice in selling meat.
∎ Promote massive fodder/forage plantation, support entrepreneurs to promote fodder markets.

∎ Fluent in Bengali language and English (both spoken and written).
