Responsibilities & Context:
The core of the job is understanding a student's background to match them with the right opportunities.
Academic Assessment: Evaluating transcripts, test scores (IELTS/TOEFL/GRE/GMAT), and work experience to determine eligibility.
Goal Mapping: Discussing career aspirations to recommend suitable countries, universities, and specific courses.
Financial Planning: Advising students and parents on tuition fees, living expenses, and available scholarships or financial aid.
Counsellors guide the student through the complex paperwork required by foreign institutions.
Document Verification: Ensuring all documents (SOPs, LORs, CVs) meet the specific standards of the target university.
Application Submission: Managing deadlines and ensuring applications are submitted accurately through university portals.
Interview Prep: Training students for university admission interviews or English proficiency tests.
Since a university acceptance is useless without a visa, this is a critical responsibility.
Visa Documentation: Assisting with the compilation of financial proof, health insurance, and embassy-specific forms.
Mock Interviews: Conducting practice sessions to prepare students for rigorous visa officer interviews.
Regulation Updates: Staying informed about changing immigration laws in major hubs like the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and Europe.
In most agencies, a counsellor is also responsible for the "pipeline" of students.
Lead Conversion: Following up with inquiries from social media, walk-ins, or educational fairs to convert them into registered students.
Relationship Building: Maintaining strong ties with university representatives and "aggregator" platforms.
Event Participation: Representing the agency at seminars, schools, and colleges to promote study abroad services.
The job often continues until the student actually lands in their destination.
Briefing Sessions: Organizing "Pre-Departure Orientations" to cover topics like cultural adjustment, part-time work laws, and accommodation.
Logistics: Sometimes assisting with flight bookings, foreign exchange, and initial housing setups.
