Job Summary
The ECG Technician is a healthcare professional responsible for performing non-invasive diagnostic tests that measure the electrical activity of a patient's heart. Working under the supervision of a cardiologist, physician, or other medical professional, the technician prepares patients for the procedure, operates electrocardiograph equipment, and ensures the accuracy and quality of the recordings for review and analysis.
Key Responsibilities
Patient preparation: Explain the ECG procedure to patients, address their concerns, and ensure their comfort throughout the process.
Procedure execution: Attach electrodes correctly to the patient's chest and limbs and operate the ECG machine to record the heart's electrical activity.
Monitoring: Monitor the patient during the test, especially during cardiac stress tests, observing any changes in their vital signs or symptoms and reporting abnormalities to the supervising clinician.
Equipment operation: Perform routine equipment checks, calibration, and cleaning to ensure the ECG machine is functioning properly and provides accurate results.
Documentation: Record patient information, test results, and any significant observations accurately in patient charts or the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
Record analysis: Process and prepare digital data from the ECG readings for the physician's interpretation.
Administrative duties: Schedule and coordinate appointments to manage workflow efficiently.
Safety and compliance: Adhere strictly to infection control protocols and patient confidentiality (HIPAA) regulations.
Support emergency care: Respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations, such as cardiac arrests, to provide real-time ECG data to the medical team.
Qualifications and Skills
Education: Diploma or equivalent is required. Completion of a certified ECG technician training program from an accredited institution is highly preferred.
Certification: Certification as a Certified Cardiography Technician (CCT) or Certified ECG Technician (CET) is highly desirable.
Experience: Previous experience in a healthcare setting, ideally as an ECG technician, is preferred.
Technical expertise: Thorough knowledge of ECG procedures, equipment operation, and the ability to recognize basic rhythm disturbances.
Anatomy and physiology: A strong understanding of cardiovascular anatomy and physiology to ensure accurate electrode placement and preliminary interpretation.
Attention to detail: Meticulous approach to recording data and identifying subtle abnormalities in ECG tracings.
Communication skills: Strong interpersonal skills to communicate clearly and empathetically with patients, as well as effectively report findings to medical staff.
Critical thinking: Ability to interpret ECG results and respond appropriately in various situations.
Physical stamina: Capability to stand for extended periods and maneuver equipment and patients.
BLS certification: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification is often required.
