Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience: Previous experience in a hospital or diagnostic center laboratory is preferred.
  • Technical expertise: Knowledge of laboratory testing procedures and equipment, along with basic computer skills for data entry and software use.
  • Attention to detail: Meticulous and diligent in performing tests, recording data, and labeling specimens to ensure accuracy.
  • Manual dexterity: The ability to work carefully and precisely with small instruments, specimens, and equipment.
  • Problem-solving: Ability to troubleshoot basic equipment issues and identify and resolve inconsistencies in results.
  • Communication skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills for report findings and collaborating with team members.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Physical stamina: Capability to stand for extended periods while collecting and processing samples.

Job Summary

The Lab Technician performs various routine and specialized laboratory tests and procedures on biological specimens, such as blood, urine, tissue, and other body fluids, to provide reliable data for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. They work under the supervision of a Medical Technologist or pathologist, following established protocols to ensure the integrity and accuracy of all test results.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Specimen handling: Receive, label, and log patient specimens. Ensure proper handling, sorting, and storage in accordance with laboratory protocols and safety guidelines.
  • Sample analysis: Perform routine tests in various areas of the lab, including hematology, chemistry, microbiology, serology, and blood banking.
  • Equipment operation: Operate, calibrate, and maintain standard laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, microscopes, and automated analyzers.
  • Quality control: Perform daily quality control and assurance procedures to verify the accuracy and reliability of all test results.
  • Data management: Record test results and data accurately in laboratory logs and the Laboratory Information System (LIS). Organize and report findings to senior staff and physicians.
  • Safety and compliance: Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, infection control procedures, and ethical guidelines, including HIPAA and confidentiality regulations.
  • Communication: Alert supervisory personnel and/or clinicians of critical or abnormal test results in a timely manner.
  • Stock management: Maintain and monitor inventory of lab supplies, reagents, and chemicals. Notify the Lab-In-Charge to order and restock as needed.
  • Housekeeping: Maintain a clean, sterile, and orderly work environment.
