Education:
    • Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Chemistry

Skills Required:

Additional Requirements:
  • Specialized training or certification in cosmetic or detergent formulation will be an advantage.

  • Minimum 8–10 years of progressive experience in soap, detergent, or cosmetic formulation and production.

  • Proven experience in quality control, laboratory testing, and product standardization (experience with BSTI certification will be an asset).

  • Experience in industrial or small-scale production environments, preferably with exposure to livelihood or skills development projects.

  • Prior experience working in NGO, humanitarian, or development projects will be considered an advantage.

  • Strong knowledge of formulation chemistry, surfactants, additives, and raw material interactions relevant to soap and detergent production.

  • Ability to conduct product stability, pH, and performance tests and interpret results for quality improvement.

  • Proficiency in developing and maintaining laboratory documentation, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and quality assurance checklists.

  • Familiarity with safety protocols for chemical handling, storage, and waste management.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting and data management.

  • Ability to train and mentor production staff and community members with varying technical backgrounds using participatory and practical approaches.

  • Effective communication and report-writing skills in both English and Bangla.

  • Capacity to work under pressure and in humanitarian or field-based settings, ensuring quality and safety compliance.

  • High level of integrity, accountability and sensitivity when working with diverse populations, including refugees and host communities.

Project: Clean Futures Cooperative: A WASH–Livelihoods Model for Refugee and Host Resilience
Duration: 5.5 months (October 16, 2025 to March 31, 2026)

Job Context

PHALS is a non-governmental organization (NGO) working in the field of humanitarian assistance and development since 1996. In this continuation, PHALS is going to implement the Clean Futures Cooperative: A WASH–Livelihoods Model for Refugee and Host Resilience Project in Cox’s Bazar funded by FCDO and supported by IOM. We are seeking a qualified and expert Chemist who will execute the production through developing, testing, and ensuring the quality of soap and related hygiene products under Clean Futures Cooperative: A WASH–Livelihoods Model for Refugee and Host Resilience Project. The role focuses on creating effective, safe, and eco-friendly formulations that support public health goals and enhance livelihood opportunities for refugee and host communities. The Chemist will also train and guide production teams, maintain quality control systems, and ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, test, and optimize formulations for Beauty Soap and Laundry Soap to ensure quality, consistency, safety, and cost-effectiveness.

  • Conduct laboratory analyses to evaluate product performance, stability, and safety; compile necessary documentation and samples for BSTI approval.

  • Ensure that all production processes comply with health, safety, environmental, and hygiene standards.

  • Prepare, maintain, and update documentation related to formulations, testing protocols, and quality assurance records.

  • Provide technical guidance, on-the-job training, and capacity building to production staff and cooperative members on soap-making processes and quality control.

  • Monitor the quality of raw materials and recommend specifications and standards for procurement to ensure consistent product quality.

  • Collaborate closely with project and livelihood teams to align production with market demand, sustainability objectives, and project targets.

  • Maintain laboratory equipment, ensure safe handling and storage of chemicals, and adhere to safety procedures at all times.

  • Support innovation and continuous improvement in product design, production efficiency, and cost reduction.

  • Contribute to technical reports, demonstrations, exhibitions, and promotional activities related to the project’s WASH and livelihood components.

  • Uphold PHALS’ values, code of conduct, and commitment to safeguarding and PSEA (Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse).
