∎ Reporting to the Research Manager, the Senior Research Officer will be accountable for oversight of research activities that BBC Media Action is currently undertaking and line managing Research Officer(s), Monitoring and Evaluation Officer and Research Assistant(s). S/he will be responsible for ensuring the research is technically well designed, resourced and implemented; findings are synthesised, reported and disseminated to a range of audiences. The role includes coaching and mentoring junior research staff to manage the research, including support to staff to undertake agency recruitment, research instrument design and piloting, qualitative and quantitative fieldwork, analysis and interpretation. The post-holder will be responsible for the quality of analysis and interpretation, ensuring that the research is useful and used by BBC Media Action production and creative teams.
∎ This post is based full-time in Dhaka with a lot of travel to Cox`s Bazar and other parts of Bangladesh, normal office hours will apply but the nature of the role means that a flexible approach to working time will be necessary.
Job Responsibilities:
∎ Working with the research team in Dhaka, Cox's Bazar and London to deliver research activities to inform media production, outreach and/or capacity-building activities and to deliver evaluative research to meet donor requirements.
∎ Support the development of research and M&E plans, instruments and sampling design, commissioning of agencies for quantitative research, qualitative and quantitative analysis and interpretation, reporting and dissemination of research findings on time, and to high quality for the projects responsible for. Ensure AIM (BBC Media Action's internal quality assurance process for research) is being used in every step of the research process.
∎ Planning and monitoring resource needs (with support from Research Manager), including creation and input into Gantt charts and research, project and programme plans, and maintaining and updating delivery dashboard for projects responsible for.
∎ Support and develop the research team, including coaching, mentoring and/or training to develop their research and project management skills.
∎ Undertake, and support other projects to design and undertake quantitative and qualitative data analysis, ensuring that the interpretation supports the development of media products and is thematically appropriate. Also, provide technical and thematic support to other projects either by being the technical lead in terms of research methodologies (qualitative or quantitative) or by providing thematic input in different stages of research.
∎ Prepare and deliver internal research presentations and reports to inform the creative process, monitor, and evaluate project effectiveness, and contribute to project strategy. Support Research Manager in external dissemination with donors and for business development clients.
∎ Support the Research Manager by synthesising insights from research findings for business development and overall organisational strategic development.
∎ Represent R&L and BBC Media Action with external and internal stakeholders, as instructed or in absence of the Research Manager, including disseminating our findings and investigating new funding opportunities.
∎ Line management of at least one Research Officer, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer and one Research Assistant including supporting personal development, motivation and technical support.

∎ Strong presentation skills and experience in adapting oral and written research outputs to present in non-technical language to diverse audiences from grassroots to senior levels, including NGO staff, non-researchers, academics and donors. E
∎ Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to engage appropriately with audiences, journalists, local researchers, contractors, senior project staff and donors. E
∎ Excellent track record of delivering research findings on time, on budget and to a high standard. E
∎ Ability to quality assures quantitative or qualitative analysis and reporting. E
∎ Fluent in written and spoken English and Bangla. E
∎ Understanding of development and humanitarian response approaches in Bangladesh. D
∎ Experience working with media organisations in applying research findings to the production of media outputs and broadcast strategy. D
∎ Experience working with development organisations to apply research findings to develop health, governance, humanitarian response or resilience interventions. D
∎ The role may involve working with groups of vulnerable children and adults. For the successful candidate, mandatory training will be provided on BBC Media Action's safeguarding policy and staff code of conduct.
