Partners in Health and Development (PHD) a reputed national NGO, with technical and financial support from international development partners (UNFPA / Global Affairs Canada), is implementing a Improve rights to sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health (SRMNCAH) and well-being for vulnerable populations in low-performing Bhola districts of Bangladesh project to strengthen Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC) services at District Hospital level.
The project aims to improve quality, access, and equity in life-saving maternal and newborn health services, including 24/7 C-section and emergency obstetric care. Applications are invited from qualified and committed medical professionals.
Job Responsibilities (Gynecologist / Obstetrician)
As part of the general responsibilities, the Gynecologist/Obstetrician will contribute direct
clinical expertise to patient care and provide professional guidance to colleagues in their
duties and risk management, ensuring the highest standards of maternal and newborn care.
The role includes supporting accurate and timely diagnosis of complex obstetric and
gynecological cases with appropriate treatment plans, identifying opportunities to improve
patient flow, and collaborating with the Upazila Health Complex (UHC) in medical
administration and data management. The incumbent will ensure compliance with national
healthcare regulations, clinical protocols, and safety standards.
Specifically, under the technical supervision of UNFPA’s Regional Office, Bhola, and in close
collaboration with the respective Upazila Health Complex (UHC), Civil Surgeon’s Office (CS
Office), and relevant government institutions at Upazila level, the Gynecologist/Obstetrician
will undertake, but not be limited to, the following responsibilities:
Provide specialized clinical consultation and management for obstetric, gynecological, and relevant neonatal cases, particularly those referred from UH&FWCs, USCs, Community Clinics, and the community.
Deliver life-saving obstetric and surgical care for MNCAH cases, including medico-legal emergencies, ensuring no avoidable delay at any point of entry to the Health Complex.
Ensure continuity of care for patients admitted to inpatient wards by performing roster duties as required to support 24/7 emergency obstetric services.
Assess, monitor, and interpret patients’ vital signs and clinical conditions with due attention, and initiate appropriate follow-up actions as clinically indicated.
Prescribe medications and clinical interventions to optimize patients’ conditions, and provide necessary information and counselling to patients and their family members, including arranging follow-up care when required.
Perform and/or assist in Caesarean section operations, both scheduled/elective and emergency procedures, in accordance with national clinical guidelines and standards.
Actively engage in referral decision-making and coordinate transportation management for patients requiring transfer to higher-level facilities.
Maintain close coordination with project partners and government counterparts, and provide technical guidance and support to clinical colleagues.
Follow daily clinical and OT checklists to ensure the availability, proper use, and management of medical supplies and equipment.
Contribute to the preparation of periodic technical and programmatic reports, case documentation, and other information requests as required by the project and donors.
Coordinate with data entry operators to ensure accurate and timely entry of clinical information into DHIS2, maintaining strict patient confidentiality.
Perform any other relevant duties assigned by the designated focal person or supervisor in line with project objectives.
Maintain a functional working relationship with, and remain accountable to, the In-Charge of the respective Upazila Health Complex (UHC).
Carry out any additional assignments assigned by PHD management to support effective implementation of the project.
