Responsibilities & Context:
∎ CWFD emerged from an emotional response to help women in need of reproductive health care counseling. The organization, originally named as “Concerned Women for Family Planning (CWFP), started its voluntary activities in 1974 to help the refugees coming to Dhaka city after the devastating famine of 1974. The organization was registered in 1975 with Directorate of Social welfare and formally launched its project activities in 1976 with only 5 female staff to cover an area of Dhaka city slum comprising around 50,000 people. ∎ Programme background: Concerned Women for Family Development received funds from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to implement the Adolescents and Youth Programme. This programme aims to address gender-based violence (GBV) in Bangladesh by establishing linkages to adolescents’ sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and gender equity, and improving relationship-building skills. CWFD also implements a national humanitarian and life skills programme with funding support from UNFPA. As part of this, CWFD is working with UNFPA to implement the national Humanitarian Programme and Life Skill Education (LSE) Programme.
∎ The project will be implemented in five selected low-performing districts addressing policy, standards of practice and guidelines for strengthening SRMNCAH services where additional capacity development is required to boost the progress that will contribute to national results. The following five districts have been selected for programmatic action: Bhola, Khagrachari, Sherpur, Sunamgonj and Kurigram. The focus population includes adolescents, girls and women, pregnant and lactating mothers, newborn and children under five years of age, and Sex workers, a diverse gender population. The project interventions will be based on the learning from the previous Integrated sexual, reproductive health and rights including maternal and new-born health (ImSRHR & MNH) projects, reflecting the best practices and generated evidence and implementing new interventions for strengthening Primary Health Care (PHC) to generate evidence.
