• Essential: Bachelor’s degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, Biostatistics, Medicine, Nursing, Biomedical Sciences, or Health Sciences from a recognized institution.
• Preferred: Master’s in Epidemiology, Applied Statistics, or Public Health with a focus on field epidemiology.
• Essential : Minimum 3 Years of working experience in the field Epidemiology or a similar field.
• At least few years of tropical medicine experience (having assumed coordination position is a plus) would be desirable.
• Desirable experience working in Dengue, Malaria, Chikungunya projects.
• Desirable experience working as an epidemiologist in a research project.
• Use of epidemiology related analytical software (excel, Epi-info, STATA or SPSS)
• English and Bangla language essential, Chittagongian Dialect Desirable
• Carrying out key epidemiological activities in outbreak investigation (description including time, place, people with emphasis on mapping when it is needed) and advising on the operational response
• Implementing and maintaining a surveillance system to monitor epidemiological trends of relevant outbreak-prone diseases. Guiding activities of medical staff for surveillance and/or active case finding, including ensuring understanding of the need for consistent case definitions and data recording (briefing of all new staff)
• Monitoring and Implementing initial Assessment (for emergency situation), rapid health assessments and (baseline or follow-up) surveys. Where standard protocols are not available or appropriate, developing a protocol seeking extensive feedback and pilot testing of tools to ensure the objectives will be met robustly with support of HQ epidemiologist
• Preparing and adapting routine documentation (survey forms, training materials, letters of request/notification, locally appropriate consent forms etc.) with support of HQ epidemiologist. Preparing an appropriate sampling frame and sample selection guidelines with support of HQ epidemiologist
• Planning and supervising the associated HR processes of the staff under his/her responsibility (recruitment, training/induction, evaluation, potential detection, development and communication) and ensuring that staff exhibits required skills after training and pilot test
• Managing data systems and ensuring accurate, high quality databases; analyzing results and preparing regular written reports on progress and findings for medical coordinator/HQ and when appropriate to external collaborators/networks (MoH, other NGOs, etc.)
• Providing training sessions to medical teams on relevant aspects of epidemiology to enhance team response capacity
• The Epidemiologist will be responsible for both epidemiological surveillance and operational research. The role is essential to help MSF generate, analyze, and apply evidence to guide programmatic decisions and contribute to broader dengue control efforts.
1. Surveillance System Strengthening
• Lead the design, setup, and maintenance of a local dengue surveillance system in collaboration with DGHS, CCC, and MSF's medical team.
• Support health facility- and community-based data collection, validation, and standardization, ensuring timely and accurate tracking of dengue cases.
• Develop and maintain GIS-based hotspot maps using local data to identify priority intervention areas, support vector control planning, and inform health promotion strategies.
• Train MSF and external authorities (CCC, MoH) on consistent case definitions, data collection tools, and basic outbreak data interpretation.
2. Data Analysis and Reporting
• Analyze surveillance data regularly to detect trends in dengue incidence, severity, and spatial distribution.
• Produce weekly and monthly summary reports for internal and external use, including visual dashboards, graphs, and tables for coordination meetings.
• Provide epidemiological input to the monthly medical report and contribute to presentations, donor briefings, and strategic reviews.
• Ensure all data handling meets MSF standards of quality, security, and confidentiality.
3. Operational Research Design and Implementation
• Co-lead the design of operational research protocols in line with MSF priorities such as studies on dengue serotype circulation, care-seeking behavior, or vector control effectiveness.
• Work closely with the HPCE Manager, Entomologist, and Medical Team Leader to align research with field realities and strategic needs.
• Guide sampling strategy, inclusion criteria, data tools, and ethical procedures including community consent and dissemination plans.
• Support submission of protocols to relevant ethics review boards (internal and national) as required.
4. Research Execution and Dissemination
• Oversee the training and supervision of field staff involved in research data collection to ensure data quality and compliance with study protocols.
• Manage and analyze collected data using appropriate statistical software (e.g., R, Epi Info, STATA, or SPSS).
• Prepare clear, well-structured research reports, drawing conclusions that support actionable recommendations for MSF and partners.
• Support dissemination of findings through coordination meetings, joint workshops, and written communication with MoH, CCC, academic institutions (e.g., Chattogram University, CVASU), and local stakeholders.
5. Internal and External Collaboration
• Work closely with the Medical Team Leader, Entomologist, and HPCE Manager to ensure that surveillance data and research outputs guide field interventions.
• Liaise with external actors, such as DGHS, hospitals (CMCH, CGH, BITID), and academic partners, for data sharing, research validation, or collaborative analysis.
• Represent MSF in technical forums, data working groups, or joint review sessions when requested.
6. Supervision, Capacity Building and Knowledge Sharing
• Supervise (line manage) medical data processing officers.
• Organize and lead capacity-building sessions for MSF, CCC, and MoH staff on dengue surveillance, data analysis, and evidence-informed decision-making.
• Provide ongoing mentoring and guidance to data entry officers, surveillance staff, and any field research teams under MSF’s responsibility.
Permanent Contract. Salary according to level Eight (8) of the internal MSF salary grid (BDT 95000). Salary is not negotiable. Income tax deduction from salary based on current income tax rule. 2 annual leave days per month worked. Medical insurance for employee and direct dependents based on Health Care Policy- Locally Recruited Staff.
There is no provisions for relocation. 2 Festival Bonuses after completion of one year of uninterrupted continuous service.
