1. GENERAL
Practical Action Consulting (PAC) Bangladesh Limited is undertaking a 120-day feasibility study for a combined Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP) and Material Recovery Facility (MRF) at Jalkuri, Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC), commissioned by the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) with financial support from the British Red Cross (BRC). The facility will serve the Shumilpara low-income settlement (NCC Ward 6) at a design catchment of approximately 10,000 Population Equivalents (PE), and is intended to operate as an integrated circular economy service, combining faecal sludge management (FSM) with solid waste management (SWM) resource recovery, on a financially sustainable basis beyond the donor-support period.
A geotechnical and subsoil investigation is required at the Jalkuri site to establish subsurface stratigraphy, soil bearing capacity, and groundwater conditions before foundation design. Findings are expected to provide an understanding of the geotechnical conditions for the project`s Land Suitability Report and the Site Suitability Index within the feasibility study.
Narayanganj sits on a meandering floodplain characterised by soft alluvial soils, shallow groundwater tables, and seasonal waterlogging. These conditions must be explicitly assessed given the heavy foundation loads anticipated for FSTP structures (tipping floors, drying beds, treatment tanks) and MRF sorting, processing, and equipment floors, and given the known risk of differential settlement in floodplain soils with variable organic content.
