Job Summary
A Senior Medical Officer in Colorectal Surgery will deliver comprehensive surgical support—managing wards, assisting in operative procedures, performing minor surgeries, responding to emergencies, and ensuring quality documentation and patient communication—all within a structured, ethical, and collaborative environment at BSH. The role combines clinical excellence with administrative diligence and professional integrity.
1. Patient Care & Clinical Duties
Conduct comprehensive assessment of patients with colorectal disorders, including colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, anal fistulas, fissures, hemorrhoids, polyps, and diverticular disease.
Manage pre-operative and post-operative care, including evaluation, monitoring, wound care, and follow-up treatment.
Take active part in daily ward rounds under the guidance of consultant colorectal surgeons.
Prepare and document clinical notes, progress reports, and discharge summaries.
Assist in planning and implementing multidisciplinary treatment plans, especially for colorectal cancer patients.
2. Surgical Assistance & Procedures
Assist consultants during major and complex colorectal surgeries, including laparoscopic colectomies, APR, LAR, colostomies, and others.
Perform minor surgical procedures independently (e.g., incision and drainage, sigmoidoscopy, seton placement, pilonidal sinus surgeries) under consultant supervision.
Ensure preparation of operation theatres, instruments, and consent forms before procedures.
Maintain aseptic technique and ensure safe surgical practices in the OT.
Participate in emergency surgical care, including acute abdominal conditions related to colorectal pathology.
3. Emergency & On-Call Responsibilities
Respond promptly to emergency calls, including acute gastrointestinal bleeding, bowel obstruction, and perianal abscesses.
Participate in night/weekend on-call rotations, including managing surgical admissions and post-op complications.
4. Documentation & Administrative Tasks
Maintain accurate clinical documentation, case histories, progress notes, and discharge instructions in patient files and EMR systems.
Ensure proper handover and case briefing during shift changes.
Comply with hospital policies, infection control protocols, and ethical standards.
5. Academic & Professional Development
Participate in clinical teaching activities, including guiding junior doctors and interns.
Attend and contribute to case discussions, CMEs, morbidity and mortality meetings, and journal clubs.
Engage in audit and quality improvement initiatives within the colorectal surgery department.
Stay updated with the latest advances in colorectal surgery, including laparoscopic and minimally invasive techniques.
6. Communication & Teamwork
Communicate effectively with patients and families regarding diagnosis, treatment plans, surgical risks, and postoperative care.
Collaborate with nurses, anesthetists, gastroenterologists, oncologists, and stoma care nurses to ensure holistic patient care.
Foster a team-based approach to problem-solving and patient management.
