Job Context:
∎ ACLAB is implementing an ecological restoration project to reduce threats of climate crisis-induced sea level rise and coastal erosion in Cox’s Bazar and reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the ecological restoration of the dunes. The ecological restoration project, "Living Shoreline: Sustainable Restoration of the Bay of Bengal Coastal Forest and Wetlands in Bangladesh," will pilot multi-stakeholder collaborations among communities, businesses, and local governments for locally-led ecological restoration efforts.
∎ The Role:
∎ The Project Associate (Participatory GIS) is responsible for training the coastal local communities in participatory Geographic Information System (GIS) and developing GIS maps to be used in outreach, advocacy, and communication.
∎ Period: From October 2022 to September 2023
∎ Type of employment: Full time
∎ Location: Cox’s Bazar district, Bangladesh
Job Responsibilities:
∎ Working with ‘dune restoration communities’ to train them in participatory GIS and enable them to use GIS information and visualization to effectively run ecological restoration works in the pilot sites.
∎ Working with coastal local communities for the purpose of documenting dune ecosystems’ health and monitoring restoration progress using participatory GIS methods.
∎ Assisting the project manager and the team by producing GIS and integrating them in outreach, advocacy, and communication materials.
∎ Helping with restoration works in the pilot sites.
∎ Check in on daily basis with the project manager.
∎ Keeping field journals and sharing with the team.
Additional Requirements:
∎ Skills, experience, and knowledge
∎ Essential:
∎ Trained in Geographic Information System (GIS).
∎ Experienced in participatory GIS with communities.
∎ Skilled in community organizing, youth training, and event management.
∎ At least eight (2) years of professional experience as a conservation and natural resources management practitioner with
∎ Bachelor or Degree passes with science major.
∎ Ability to spend five days a week for fieldwork with the coastal communities in the villages, forest, dunes, wetland, and beach areas.
∎ Professional efficiency in Bangla and English (listening, speaking, writing, reading) language.
∎ Ability to understand (listening comprehension) the Chittagonian language.
∎ Comprehensive understanding of coastal social-ecological and social issues of Cox’s Bazar - Teknaf biogeography region.
∎ Must be a Bangladeshi citizen and at least eighteen (21) years old.
∎ Desirable:
∎ Volunteering experience in environmental conservation initiatives.
∎ Understanding the challenges of nature conservation-related fieldwork.
∎ Comprehensive understanding of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) in conservation and development projects.
∎ Basic swimming and watermanship skills.
∎ Other requirements:
∎ Required to adhere to values of the Land Rights Standards and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Also, required to adhere to values of non-discrimination, gender justice, women's rights, and child safety.
Salary:
∎ Monthly salary BDT 36,000.00 consolidated including AIT. Others benefits will be applicable as per project documents.
