The Operation Theatre (OT) Nurse is responsible for providing professional nursing care before, during, and after surgical procedures. The nurse ensures proper preparation of the operating room, maintains sterile techniques, assists surgeons and anesthesiologists during surgery, and monitors patient safety throughout the surgical process.

The role requires strong clinical skills, strict infection control practice, teamwork with surgeons and OT staff, and efficient handling of surgical instruments and equipment to ensure smooth and safe surgical operations.

Job Responsibilities

1. Pre-Operative Responsibilities

• Prepare the operation theatre before surgical procedures.

• Ensure all surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies are sterilized and ready.

• Verify patient identity, consent forms, and medical records.

• Prepare the patient for surgery according to hospital protocol.

• Assist the anesthesiologist in patient preparation and monitoring.

2. Intra-Operative Responsibilities

• Maintain strict aseptic and sterile techniques inside the OT.

• Assist surgeons by providing instruments and surgical supplies during procedures.

• Monitor patient's vital signs and report abnormalities immediately.

• Maintain accurate counts of surgical instruments, gauze, and needles.

• Handle and operate OT equipment safely.

3. Post-Operative Responsibilities

• Assist in transferring patients safely to the recovery room.

• Monitor the patient's condition after surgery.

• Ensure proper documentation of surgical procedures and nursing activities.

• Clean and prepare the OT for the next surgery.

4. Infection Control & Safety

• Follow hospital infection prevention and control protocols.

• Maintain cleanliness and sterilization of OT instruments and environment.

• Properly dispose of biomedical waste according to hospital policy.

5. Equipment & Inventory Management

• Maintain and check OT instruments and surgical equipment regularly.

• Report damaged or malfunctioning equipment immediately.

• Maintain stock of surgical consumables and OT supplies.

6. Documentation & Reporting

• Maintain proper OT records and nursing documentation.

• Prepare reports related to surgical procedures and patient care.

• Coordinate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals.

7. Teamwork & Communication

• Work closely with surgeons, anesthetists, and OT technicians.

• Communicate effectively with nursing supervisors and other departments.

• Participate in hospital training and quality improvement programs.
