Valid registration or certification from the relevant professional authority, where applicable.
Experience – Essential
• Minimum 2 years of relevant clinical experience.

Desirable

Working Conditions

Job Description: Medical Assistant – PHCC, Camp 5 & 12, Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar
Position Summary
The Medical Assistant will support the delivery of safe, timely, equitable, and patient-centered primary healthcare services at the Primary Health Care Centre (PHCC). The position holder will provide clinical care within the authorized scope of practice, support patient assessment and triage, identify danger signs, provide appropriate basic management, and ensure timely referral or consultation with Medical Officers for complicated cases.
The Medical Assistant will work closely with Medical Officers, Nurses, Midwives, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Nutrition, MHPSS, and other relevant teams to ensure quality healthcare services, accurate documentation, continuity of care, and adherence to approved clinical guidelines, organizational procedures, and relevant health sector standards.

Reports to: Medical Assistant Lead
Accountable to: Senior Medical Officer
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Service Delivery
• Provide appropriate clinical care to patients within the authorized scope of practice.
• Conduct patient assessment, including history taking and basic physical examination.
• Assess, identify, and manage common health conditions according to approved clinical guidelines and protocols.
• Provide treatment and counselling within the authorized scope of practice.
• Identify danger signs, severe illness, and complicated cases requiring immediate Medical Officer review or referral.
• Provide appropriate follow-up care as instructed by the supervising clinician.
• Ensure respectful, confidential, equitable, and patient-centred care.
2. Patient Triage & Assessment
• Support patient triage and prioritization according to clinical urgency.
• Identify patients requiring immediate or emergency medical attention.
• Measure and record vital signs and other relevant clinical information.
• Ensure timely referral of emergency and high-risk patients to the appropriate clinician or service point.
• Support effective patient flow within the PHCC.
• Assist in reducing unnecessary waiting time and ensuring appropriate access to services.
3. Basic Case Management & Referral
• Provide appropriate management of common illnesses according to approved treatment guidelines.
• Identify patients requiring Medical Officer consultation, further investigation, observation, admission, or referral.
• Provide initial stabilization of emergency patients within the scope of practice.
• Support the timely referral of complicated or severe cases.
• Complete required referral documentation accurately.
• Provide appropriate counselling to patients and caregivers regarding referral and follow-up requirements.
4. Communicable & Non-Communicable Disease Services
• Support the assessment and management of common communicable diseases according to approved protocols.
• Identify and report suspected cases of priority or outbreak-prone diseases.
• Support disease surveillance and reporting activities.
• Support screening, follow-up, and counselling for patients with common non-communicable diseases.
• Provide counselling on medication adherence, healthy lifestyle practices, and follow-up.
• Refer patients requiring advanced assessment or management to the appropriate Medical Officer.
5. Maternal, Child & Reproductive Health Support
• Support the identification and initial assessment of maternal, newborn, and child health concerns within the authorized scope of practice.
• Identify high-risk mothers, newborns, and children and ensure timely consultation or referral.
• Provide appropriate health education and counselling to patients and caregivers.
• Support family planning and reproductive health services according to programme protocols and the authorized scope of practice.
• Work closely with Medical Officers, Midwives, and Nurses to ensure continuity of care.
6. Emergency Care Support
• Identify and promptly respond to emergency and critically ill patients.
• Provide immediate basic assessment and initial stabilization within the scope of practice.
• Immediately inform the Medical Officer or Senior Medical Officer of emergency cases.
• Assist in emergency management, patient transfer, and referral.
• Participate in emergency preparedness, drills, and response activities.
7. Clinical Documentation & Patient Records
• Maintain accurate, complete, and timely patient records.
• Record relevant patient history, clinical findings, treatment provided, and follow-up instructions.
• Properly complete patient registers, referral forms, and other required documentation.
• Ensure accurate recording of service delivery information.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and follow organizational data protection procedures.
• Support the MIS team by ensuring complete and accurate clinical documentation.
8. Infection Prevention & Control (IPC)
• Follow all approved Infection Prevention and Control procedures.
• Practice and promote proper hand hygiene and standard precautions.
• Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriately.
• Follow safe waste management and environmental hygiene procedures.
• Identify and report potential IPC risks or gaps.
• Follow relevant procedures during infectious disease outbreaks and public health emergencies.
9. Medicines, Supplies & Equipment
• Ensure appropriate use of medicines within the authorized scope of practice.
• Coordinate with the Pharmacy team regarding medicine availability and patient requirements.
• Report shortages of essential medicines, medical supplies, or consumables.
• Ensure proper use and basic care of clinical equipment.
• Report damaged, malfunctioning, or unsafe equipment to the appropriate focal person.
• Support rational use of available medical supplies and resources.
10. Coordination & Teamwork
• Work closely with the Medical Assistant, Lead, Medical Officers, Nurses, Midwives, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Nutrition, MHPSS, Community Health, and other relevant teams.
• Participate in clinical meetings, case discussions, and programme review meetings as required.
• Communicate patient care concerns and service delivery challenges to the supervisor.
• Support coordination between different service points within the PHCC.
• Follow instructions and guidance from the Medical Assistant, Lead and other designated supervisors.
11. Health Information & Reporting
• Ensure accurate recording of patient consultations and service delivery data.
• Maintain relevant clinical registers and records.
• Support daily, weekly, monthly, and other required reporting.
• Report suspected outbreaks, unusual disease patterns, or other public health concerns immediately.
• Support relevant health surveillance and reporting activities.
• Maintain confidentiality of patient and programme information.
12. Professional Development
• Participate in orientation, refresher training, clinical meetings, and professional development activities.
• Maintain updated knowledge of relevant clinical guidelines, protocols, and programme procedures.
• Participate in case discussions and learning sessions.
• Seek guidance from supervisors for cases beyond the authorized scope of practice.
• Promote continuous learning and quality improvement.
13. Emergency Preparedness & Response
• Maintain readiness to support healthcare services during disease outbreaks, fires, natural disasters, mass casualty incidents, and other emergencies.
• Participate in emergency preparedness activities and drills.
• Support continuity of essential healthcare services during emergencies.
• Remain flexible to undertake additional responsibilities based on programme and emergency requirements.
