Job Context:
∎ GIZ has been working as a development partner of Bangladesh since 1972 under bilateral agreement. Currently, we are working in the areas of renewable energy, adaptation to climate change, textile and leather sector, biodiversity, as well as good governance, displacement, and migration.
∎ For the team of our "Integrated Management of the Sundarbans and the Marine Protected Area Swatch of No Ground, Bangladesh (SoNG)", we seek applications for the position of "Forestry and Biodiversity Advisor".
∎ Contract Duration: 1 year from the signing of contract (possibility to extend further)
∎ Band: 4
∎ Integrated Management of the Sundarbans and the Marine Protected Area Swatch of No Ground, Bangladesh (SoNG) aims to develop the capacity of Bangladesh Forest Department (BFD) and Department of Fisheries (DoF) as well as other stakeholder to coordinate for a better management of Marine Protected Areas (MPA) and land-based PAs. Location of assignment is the GIZ office on BFD premises in Khulna. The geographic focus of the SoNG project is on the Sundarbans and the Swatch of No Ground (SoNG). However, since Biodiversity conservation was recently elevated to a core area of German-Bangladesh development cooperation, on-site activities in the context of portfolio development might be conducted in other areas, too. Briefly summarised, SoNG has 3 main outputs: 1 Enhance coordination and inter-institutional dialogue among stakeholder, 2. Improve knowledge-based decision making, and 3. Improving situation of resource users who are dependent on the Swatch of No Ground as fishing grounds and engaging the youth in biodiversity conservation. The position holder is mainly but not exclusively responsible for the output 3.

Job Responsibilities:
∎ The position holder is responsible for:
∎ managing an area of responsibility that forms part of the programme objectives, team agreements and/or agreements with the superior
∎ assisting project/programme initiatives to provide professional advisory services to and cooperate with a broad range of target groups
∎ advise supervisor on all task when implementing GIZ rules and regulation
∎ advise supervisor in the field of project's planning, steering and monitoring
∎ Independently implement goals and requirements set by the line manager
∎ make decisions which have a short-term effect within a limited project area/ unit
∎ assist supervisor to identify day to day problem and suggest appropriate solution
∎ In this context, the position holder fulfils the following tasks:
∎ 1. General Tasks
∎ The position holder
∎ perform the specified commercial, organisational and administrative tasks correctly and on schedule in collaboration and consultation with your line manager
∎ organise all types of events that are planned in the project /programme, in accordance with GIZ's rules and regulations, and are the contact person for all internal and external actors.
∎ managing and updating the required files and data for your work area.
∎ cooperate constructively with all internal and external stakeholders in your area of responsibility and help work on the issues and tasks that arise in the project/ programme
∎ communicates with government partner coherently as discussed and agreed among the team members of the project,
∎ coordinates with the other team members of the project whose working focus lies on aspects different from this position,
∎ formulate job descriptions and terms of references for third party consultants and NGO's
∎ monitors third parties in the course of carrying out project activities and evaluates their performance,
∎ makes sure to get the consent of the AV before taking any strategically relevant initiative. This is to ensure the consistency of the project advisory approach.
∎ 2. Event management (especially in Khulna and the coastal region)
∎ The position holder
∎ organises smaller and large events (e.g. training, workshop, field visit),
∎ supports in making travel arrangements for staff and partners
∎ facilitates, monitors and reports relevant events in Khulna and the coastal region
∎ is willing to travel regularly to remote coastal regions/locations.
∎ 3. Technical support
∎ The position holder
∎ prepares concept notes, terms of reference, papers and other project documents,
∎ organises and updates the monitoring and evaluation records of the project,
∎ develops narratives of success stories in coastal communities and conducts impact studies with support of third-party consultants
∎ supports the strategic planning and development of the project and biodiversity portfolio.
∎ develops and conducts activities for women empowerment and youth mentoring in the context of SoNG and other projects in the biodiversity portfolio.
∎ assists team and third-party consultants on GIS enabled mapping and client-tailored maps.
∎ 4. Communication
∎ The position holder
∎ prepares and updates communication materials for the project including factsheets, articles, PR items, news updates for internal and external audiences,
∎ maintain liaison with the responsible person/s, authorities, NGOs and beneficiaries of the project
∎ cooperates closely with DoF and BFD in the target area
∎ keeps close contact with relevant stakeholders, officials, NGOs, universities, donors in the target areas
∎ 5. Organizational support
∎ The position holder
∎ supports AV in overall project management,
∎ contributes to a good flow of communication, especially with government officials and development partners,
∎ organises procurement processes and contracts for the project.assists the process of new project development and appraisal missions in the context of the biodiversity portfolio
∎ assists project evaluation
∎ assists ProDoc and MoA process for projects within the portfolio.
∎ 6. Other duties/additional tasks
∎ further specific tasks may be discussed and agreed upon with the AV,
∎ gathers updated information on biodiversity, blue planning and fisheries adaptation regularly for PR products,
∎ participates in working groups on cluster lever and on the country level in coordination with AV.

Additional Requirements:
∎ ability to work well under pressure and dealing with deadlines
∎ certain interest in biodiversity conservation, social forestry and especially fisheries
∎ experience with poor coastal communities is highly appreciated
∎ experience in youth work is appreciated
∎ experience in working with women organisations is a big plus
∎ fluency in written and oral English is a must,
∎ documented trainings on GIS and map creation is a plus
∎ familiarity with development cooperation,
∎ ability to work in an intercultural, open and gender-sensitive environment,
∎ very good working knowledge on ICT (phone, email, the internet and computer applications e.g. MS Office), data management skills will be an advantage,
∎ able to handle and process large data bases,
∎ sensitive, patient, discrete and flexible to respond to changing needs.
