Responsibilities & Context:

1. Trend Research and Concept Development

  • Market Analysis: Conduct continuous market and trend research (runway shows, social media, consumer behavior, and retail competition) to forecast future color palettes, silhouettes, and themes.

  • Mood Boards: Create seasonal mood boards, concept boards, and color stories that align with the brand’s identity and commercial target market.

  • Line Building: Develop seasonal line architectures and sweater classifications (e.g., core basics vs. high-fashion trend pieces).

2. Design and Illustration

  • Sketching: Produce clear hand sketches or digital flats (using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or CAD software) of sweater silhouettes, necklines, sleeves, and body lengths.

  • Stitch & Pattern Design: Design specialized knit structures, patterns, and textures (e.g., cables, ribbing, jacquards, pointelle, intarsia, and jersey stitches).

3. Technical Execution and Yarn Selection

  • Yarn Sourcing & Selection: Choose appropriate yarns based on texture, weight, season, and cost (e.g., wool, cotton, cashmere, acrylic, synthetic blends).

  • Gauge and Machine Specification: Determine the correct machine gauges (e.g., 3GG, 5GG, 7GG, 12GG) required for specific knit weights.

  • Tech Pack Creation: Prepare detailed technical specification packages (Tech Packs) containing flat drawings, measurements, stitch charts, trims, and colorways for factories and manufacturing units.

4. Sample Review and Fit Sessions

  • Prototype Evaluation: Review initial prototype samples (proto/counter samples) sent from mills or buying houses to check design accuracy and aesthetic execution.

  • Fit Sessions: Lead or participate in fit sessions alongside technical designers and pattern makers to evaluate garment drape, sizing, and balance.

  • Modifications: Identify fit or construction problems and recommend precise alterations (e.g., adjusting tension, altering armholes, or correcting length) before bulk production.

5. Collaboration and Production Management

  • Cross-Functional Teamwork: Work closely with merchandisers, product developers, sourcing teams, and quality control (QC) departments.

  • Vendor Communication: Act as the primary point of contact for external vendors, yarn mills, and overseas manufacturers to clarify specs, monitor development schedules, and resolve production hiccups.

  • Cost Control: Ensure that designs stay within target cost margins and pricing structures set by the company.
