About the Project:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) partnered with BRAC, initiated “Jameel Observatory Climate Resilient Early Warning System Network (JO-CREWSnet)” - an integrated decision-support system that will empower frontline vulnerable communities to proactively adapt to climate change. JO-CREWSnet puts cutting-edge climate forecasting technology directly into the hands of individuals; to show how future climate and extreme weather patterns will impact their lives. This technology, combined with access to innovative power, water, agriculture and financing services, will empower families, communities and government agencies to make and implement informed, proactive decisions about how to adapt to this changing world.
The project locations are (I). Munshiganj Union, Shyamnagar Upazila, Satkhira District, (ii). Baradal Union, Assashuni Upazila, Satkhira District, and (iii). Satbaria Union, Keshabpur Upazila, Jashore District; and the project focus areas are, 1. Housing & Shelters: Systems analysis for multi-use, multi-purpose shelters from intensifying cyclones and heat stress, 2. Water Security Improving access to potable water through rain water harvesting and desalination techniques, 3. Agriculture and Livelihoods: Assessment of climate impacts on land use and farming decisions, incorporation of new climate science findings in proactive community adaptation efforts. A virtual platform that is designed to connect JO-CREWSnet principal investigators and researchers with policy makers and planners at key civil-service institutions in Bangladesh. The Adaptation Center (AC) is envisioned to interact closely with planners in Bangladesh to empower them to achieve effective and proactive climate-change adaptation in southwest Bangladesh and at the national level.
