The Specialist / Registrar in General Surgery plays a critical role in providing pre-operative, operative, and post-operative care to surgical patients under the supervision of consultants. The role requires clinical expertise, teamwork, and the ability to respond effectively in high-pressure emergency situations.This position supports the consultants in managing both elective and emergency surgical cases, ensures safe and timely surgical interventions, and contributes to continuous improvement in surgical outcomes and patient safety.
Job Responsibilities:-
Initial Patient Assessment:
Assess patients upon admission, conducting thorough history-taking and physical examinations within the first 24 hours
Investigation & Diagnostics:
Authorize and ensure timely initiation of relevant investigations, especially urgent ones, in coordination with the primary consultant.
In-Patient Management:
Perform daily rounds of all surgical in-patients, reviewing progress and clinical status in consultation with supervising consultants.
Surgical Support:
Assist consultants in the operating theatre and perform minor procedures independently (e.g., incision & drainage, suturing, dressing changes, catheterization).
Prepare patients for surgery, ensuring informed consent and pre-operative assessment is complete.
Ensure the availability and preparation of surgical instruments and support staff.
Documentation:
Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records, including initial assessments, progress notes, investigation results, and treatment plans.
Treatment Administration:
Administer treatment regimens as per consultant advice, ensuring the correct dosage, frequency, and route while adhering to safety protocols.
Emergency Response:
Continuously monitor patient conditions, modify treatment plans as necessary, and respond promptly to surgical or medical emergencies.
Discharge Planning:
Prepare comprehensive discharge summaries in a timely manner and counsel patients regarding medication, follow-up, and lifestyle modifications.
Safety & Compliance:
Follow all hospital protocols strictly and actively contribute to a safe clinical environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
Academic Involvement:
Participate in clinical case presentations, departmental workshops, and multidisciplinary clinical meetings.
Training & Development:
Engage in continuing medical education (CME), hospital-organized training sessions, and pursue opportunities for professional growth.
Quality & Improvement:
Contribute to departmental quality initiatives, audits, and patient safety projects to enhance care standards.
