Education:
  • MBBS ( with post-graduation degree such as FCPS/MS/MRCS part 1/Phase A will be preferred)

  • Valid medical registration/license.

  • Minimum 3 years of clinical experience in pediatric cardiology, pediatric cardiac surgery, pediatric intensive care, or a related specialty.

  • Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) preferred.

Responsibilities & Context:

Job Summary

The Senior Medical Officer (SMO) – Pediatric Cardiac Surgery is responsible for providing comprehensive medical care to pediatric cardiac surgery patients before, during, and after surgical procedures. The role involves assisting cardiac surgeons, coordinating multidisciplinary patient care, monitoring clinical outcomes, and ensuring adherence to established clinical protocols and quality standards.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Assess, diagnose, and manage pediatric patients with congenital and acquired heart diseases requiring surgical intervention.

  • Conduct pre-operative evaluations, including history taking, physical examinations, and review of diagnostic investigations.

  • Assist pediatric cardiac surgeons during surgical procedures as required.

  • Monitor patients in the post-operative period, including intensive care and ward settings.

  • Manage post-operative complications and emergencies promptly and effectively.

  • Develop and implement treatment plans in consultation with pediatric cardiac surgeons and multidisciplinary teams.

  • Participate in daily patient rounds and clinical discussions.

  • Ensure accurate interpretation of laboratory, radiological, echocardiographic, and other diagnostic findings.

  • Prescribe medications and treatments according to established clinical guidelines and hospital policies.

Patient Care & Coordination

  • Coordinate patient care with pediatric cardiologists, anesthesiologists, intensivists, nurses, perfusionists, and allied health professionals.

  • Educate patients' families regarding diagnosis, treatment plans, surgical procedures, risks, and post-operative care.

  • Facilitate referrals and follow-up care as required.

  • Ensure continuity of care throughout the patient journey.

Emergency & Critical Care

  • Respond to medical emergencies involving pediatric cardiac surgery patients.

  • Provide advanced life support and critical care management when necessary.

  • Participate in on-call and emergency duty rosters.

Quality & Patient Safety

  • Ensure compliance with clinical protocols, infection control standards, and patient safety regulations.

  • Participate in clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Monitor and report adverse events, complications, and patient outcomes.

  • Contribute to the development and revision of clinical pathways and protocols.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely medical records.

  • Prepare discharge summaries, operative notes, progress notes, and clinical reports.

  • Ensure documentation complies with regulatory and accreditation requirements.
