∎ Project Background: The ready-made garment (RMG) sector valued at USD 32 billion is the core of the Bangladesh economy. 81% of the country`s exports are attributed to the sector and it is a significant source of employment for 4.4 million people, of whom 65 - 85% are women. However, the sector has a significant environmental footprint and factories are operating on unsustainable practices. The challenge to spur future growth lies in several areas, including water supply, polluting discharges, power generation and access to finance. There is additional stress on water supply due to climate variability and change and the increasing frequency of extreme events such as floods, storms and droughts). This data calls for immediate action.
∎ To address these issues, IFC, with support from the Danish and Netherlands Government, leading apparel brands, have launched the PaCT II: Partnership for Cleaner Textile. The overall program goal of PaCT II is to deepen Cleaner Production (CP) interventions and enhance competitiveness of the sector across the entire value chain of the textile sector of Bangladesh including textile mills, wet dyeing and finishing units and garment factories. This will be done through adoption of resource efficient technologies and practices by participating factories which will lead to cost savings and operational efficiencies through reduced water, energy, chemical use and GHG emissions.
∎ About Textile Technology Business Center (TTBC): TTBC, a knowledge hub established by IFC-PaCT program, in partnership with BGMEA supports textile factories in adopting best practices and technologies that improve business and environmental sustainability. The Center is located at the BGMEA office and it`s service offerings include:
∎ Access to specialized information on resource efficiency technologies, technology suppliers, specialized publications, and operational tools
∎ Dedicated platform for exchange of knowledge and experiences through Knowledge Series and User Groups
∎ Supporting factories by facilitating investments in resource efficiency technologies
∎ Business-to-business (B2B) linkages with a strong network of local and international technology suppliers
∎ A Resource Efficiency Specialist to support in implementing the core activities of the center and strengthen it as a go-to platform for textile technology related information and services is warranted. The ultimate goal is to have the TTBC fully functional and operational knowledge and B2B platform for the textile sector.
Job Responsibilities:
∎ Assignment Objective: The objective of this position is to facilitate the running of the TTBC, support in implementing the core activities of the center and strengthen it as a go-to platform for textile technology related information and services. The ultimate goal is to have the TTBC fully functional and operational as an independent knowledge hub and B2B platform for the textile sector.
Additional Requirements:
∎ Prior experience of working in a development organization will be an added advantage.
∎ Sound knowledge about the financing needs of the garment and textile sector is desirable.
∎ A strong contact network in the textile sector is required, particularly with financial institutions, service providers and knowledge networks, trade associations, and preferable also with individual factories.
∎ Ability to work with limited supervision and to think strategically and independently.
∎ Demonstrated ability to succeed in a multi-tasking professional environment, managing multiples demands on time and resources.
∎ Ability to develop, analyse and articulate technical content pertaining to the project.
