Responsibilities & Context:
To clean and arrange the workplace when reports for duty.
To follow the standard criterion of patient identification and blood collection criterion for various tests.
To go through the request paper carefully to know the nature of the tests required, arrange proper tubes for collection. If fails to understand any test, he must take instruction from the Sr. Phlebotomist / SHO/Specialist./Consultant.
To work in the designated work stations until notified to move elsewhere.
To keep all the syringes, tubes, tourniquets ready for extraction of blood in various specific places in the Sample Collection Room, Cabins and Wards and must know their exact location and must not fumble for these things in presence of the patients.
To have knowledge of skin sterilization and position of veins in the arm and dorsum and inspect the veins of the patient and ensure minimize the patients fear and anxiety during blood collection.
To know the local application of anesthetic spray in case of nervous females and children.
To use butterfly needle for extraction of blood from children and from persons having very thin veins. Must extract blood in one go with minimal discomfort to the patient
To ensure the availability of all necessary articles such as sterile cotton, 70% alcohol, Iodine, Band aid etc.
To know and use proper anticoagulants and tubes for blood collections for various purposes.
To draw blood according to the order of draw, e.g. blood culture, plain tube, coagulation tube, heparin tube, violet tube, fluoride tube in that manner.
To work under the guidance of the Collection Center Executive and must seek permission from him while leaving that area for any collection in other areas or for any other reason.
To advice the patient for mid-stream clean catch sample during urine sample collection
To take special care to receive samples for Histopathology/Cytology and specimens for culture sensitivity and staining
