The role ensures that all hospital areas are clean, safe, hygienic, comfortable, and aesthetically maintained to meet national healthcare standards. The position also ensures proper infection prevention, waste handling, linen circulation, staff uniforms, and equipment maintenance.

As a senior administrative leader, the Head of Housekeeping manages supervisors and staff, controls departmental budgets, coordinates with clinical and support departments, and leads continuous improvement in service quality, hygiene, and operational efficiency.

Duties & Responsibilities:

A. Administrative & Strategic Management

  1. Develop and implement departmental policies, SOPs, cleaning schedules, and inspection plans for all hospital areas (wards, ICU, OT, OPD, labs, admin, public zones).

  2. Set annual goals, performance indicators, and quality objectives aligned with hospital strategy.

  3. Participate in management and quality assurance committees (infection control, safety, waste management, accreditation).

  4. Prepare and manage the annual housekeeping budget (labor, consumables, equipment, laundry chemicals, tailoring materials).

  5. Plan staffing structure, shifts, and manpower deployment across all sections — cleaning, laundry, linen, and tailoring.

  6. Lead the department’s digital and operational documentation (checklists, reports, training records, audit findings).

B. Cleaning & Environmental Hygiene Management

  1. Supervise daily cleaning, sanitization, and housekeeping operations across all hospital areas.

  2. Ensure infection control protocols are strictly followed, especially in critical care areas and isolation units.

  3. Conduct daily and periodic inspections of cleanliness and sanitation levels using standardized checklists.

  4. Oversee deep cleaning schedules, pest control programs, floor polishing, and waste bin sanitation.

  5. Monitor usage and storage of cleaning chemicals, PPE, and equipment to ensure safety and cost control.

  6. Maintain a high level of hospital ambience through cleanliness, odor control, and aesthetic maintenance.

C. Linen & Laundry Management

  1. Plan and supervise the collection, segregation, washing, disinfecting, drying, ironing, and distribution of hospital linen (sheets, towels, patient gowns, staff uniforms, curtains, etc.).

  2. Ensure infection-free handling of soiled and clean linen in coordination with Infection Control and Nursing Departments.

  3. Maintain inventory control — track issue, usage, losses, and replacements.

  4. Monitor and evaluate laundry machine performance, maintenance schedules, and chemical dosing systems.

  5. Ensure timely supply of clean linen to wards, OT, ICU, and other areas according to daily consumption needs.

  6. Analyze linen utilization patterns and suggest improvements to reduce wastage and extend lifespan.

D. Tailoring & Uniform Management

  1. Oversee the hospital tailor section, ensuring timely stitching, repair, and alteration of uniforms and linen items.

  2. Ensure all hospital staff uniforms meet standard design, hygiene, and identification requirements.

  3. Manage uniform issuance, replacement schedules, and record-keeping for all staff categories.

  4. Maintain a stock of tailoring materials (cloth, threads, accessories) and manage consumption efficiently.

  5. Ensure proper hygiene and cleanliness within tailoring and storage areas.

E. Waste & Environmental Safety Management

  1. Implement proper segregation, collection, transport, and disposal of hospital waste (general, biomedical, and hazardous).

  2. Ensure staff follow color-coded bin systems and wear PPE when handling waste or soiled materials.

  3. Maintain liaison with the Infection Control Committee and certified waste disposal contractors.

  4. Keep records of daily waste quantities and ensure compliance.

  5. Conduct staff training on environmental hygiene, biomedical waste handling, and spill response.

F. Staff Management & Development

  1. Supervise, motivate, and evaluate all housekeeping, laundry, and tailoring staff.

  2. Prepare rosters, attendance sheets, and duty allocations ensuring 24/7 operational coverage.
