Education:
  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree.

  • Postgraduate qualification in Pediatrics, Critical Care Medicine, Pediatric Critical Care, or equivalent specialty.

  • Specialized training or experience in Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care.

  • Valid medical license/registration.

  • Certification in PALS, BLS, and Advanced Critical Care preferred.

Responsibilities & Context:

Job Summary

The Intensivist – Pediatric Cardiac Surgery is responsible for the comprehensive management of critically ill neonates, infants, children, and adolescents undergoing cardiac surgery. The role involves providing specialized care in the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU), managing post-operative cardiac surgery patients, coordinating multidisciplinary care, and ensuring optimal clinical outcomes through evidence-based critical care practices.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Clinical Management

  • Provide intensive care management for pediatric patients before and after cardiac surgery.

  • Assess, diagnose, and manage critically ill patients with congenital and acquired heart diseases.

  • Conduct daily clinical rounds and formulate individualized treatment plans.

  • Monitor and manage hemodynamic status, cardiac function, respiratory function, and organ perfusion.

  • Interpret laboratory results, blood gas analyses, imaging studies, echocardiography findings, and other diagnostic investigations.

  • Manage post-operative complications, including low cardiac output syndrome, arrhythmias, bleeding, pulmonary hypertension, and organ dysfunction.

  • Perform timely interventions to stabilize critically ill patients.

Critical Care Procedures

  • Perform and supervise advanced critical care procedures, including:

    • Endotracheal intubation and airway management.

    • Central venous catheter insertion.

    • Arterial line placement.

    • Chest tube management.

    • Temporary pacing management.

    • Mechanical ventilation and weaning.

    • Hemodynamic monitoring and interpretation.

  • Assist in the management of extracorporeal life support (ECMO) and other advanced cardiac support systems where available.

Post-Operative Cardiac Surgical Care

  • Oversee immediate and long-term post-operative care of pediatric cardiac surgery patients.

  • Manage vasoactive medications, inotropes, sedatives, analgesics, and anticoagulation therapies.

  • Optimize fluid, electrolyte, nutritional, and metabolic management.

  • Coordinate safe transfer of patients from the operating room to the PCICU and subsequently to step-down units.

Emergency Response

  • Lead the management of medical emergencies and cardiac arrests within the Pediatric Cardiac ICU.

  • Perform Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and resuscitation procedures.

  • Provide rapid assessment and intervention for deteriorating patients.

  • Participate in emergency and on-call duty schedules.
